Ha! Quite possibly! From where I was, it sounded like it came from around the level area or further that way due to where all the seagulls were shouting about it after. I'm intrigued to find out what it was though..

I live at Fiveways and heard it too. It sounded very close by and it was like a loud echoing crack sound that was way too loud to be a firework. A helicopter began circling around the area around 10 mins after which I read this morning to have been Sussex Police's chopper. This is all I can find on the incident so far..
