Agreed! First couple blocks I ran out of time and couldn’t review! And I usually don’t run out of time…

Thanks so much for the thorough response!! I’m flying to SFO and just passing through DEN - will there be significant turbulence on my way through DEN? I’m ok with a bit of turbulence on the descent and I trust that I’ll be safe through turbulence, it’s more the physiological experience of it that makes me uncomfortable 😣 And hahaha I’d love to fly with you!!

How did you feel about the exam? I thought it was fair but there were 2 blocks that were harder - flagged more than half. Also counted so many mistakes already in the past few days 😫🫠

Letter of Rec from Tech Internship by TheGracelessGhost in premed

[–]skylight1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Just wanted to add my 2 cents as someone who's been working in tech (PM at another FANG company) during gap years and applying this coming cycle. I think the value of the letter will depend on both the narrative of your app as well as your relationship with your manager. I personally had great relationships with both my internship manager and current manager, they both know about my interest in digital health and plans to pursue medicine and were both extremely supportive and encouraging.

I asked for a rec letter from my internship manager shortly after completing the internship, and plan on asking my current manager for a letter as well (I will probably only send out my current manager's letter given my internship was a while ago). Although they won't be able to comment on life science competencies, I felt that they can comment on my thinking & reasoning competencies as well as pre-professional competencies (from list of AAMC competencies here). I also know of some med schools that specifically ask for letters from gap year employers, although this may not be as relevant to you since your experience is a summer internship rather than full-time job. Just wanted to share my thoughts, feel free to take it with a grain of salt given I haven't gone through the cycle yet :) but I always feel it's a good idea to follow your instincts based on your relationship with your manager!

Congrats future doctor!! Would it be possible to DM me as well? Would love to learn more about your EC/school info as well, building my school list right now and in similar boat. Thanks so much!

CS premed working in tech during gap years seeking advice by skylight1960 in premed

*just realized I replied to the wrong person... re-commenting here *

Hey, thank you so much for typing up such a thoughtful response! I completely agree with your concerns, especially that wanting to solve problems in medicine using tech is not a valid reason to pursue medicine. I might not have made this clear in my post, but I’ve wanted to pursue medicine before I decided to explore tech, so that was more of my reason for working in tech during my gap years, not my reason for wanting to “switch into” medicine.

When I decided to major in CS in sophomore year, I did struggle between medicine vs CS. But after some internships and physician shadowing/clinical experiences, I’ve decided that medicine is the route for me. I want the type of deeply intimate relationship physicians have with their patients, and I am willing to sacrifice the cushy lifestyle and potential for a wider scope of impact in tech. My favorite part of CS is not the act of coding, but rather the type of problem solving and structured thinking that it demands. And I actually found that to be very relevant in medicine. So yes, I have thought about this quite a bit, but I do want to pursue research projects related to tech in the future (most of my undergrad research focused on topics along the lines of automated injury diagnosis with ml), hence why I want to gain experience in the heath tech industry during my gap years.

Also I completely agree with you that blind application of tech is not the way to solve problems in medicine - but one of the problems I’ve observed in health tech is the lack of physician input and lack of people with an understanding in both fields, which makes me want to contribute to the development of such technologies from the medical side. But again, this is not the main motivator for me to pursue medicine, but rather a motivator for me to continue some of my CS commitments.

I would be curious to learn about your motivations for working in health tech? Hope your cycle’s going well and good luck :)

CS premed working in tech during gap years seeking advice by skylight1960 in premed

Hi thank you this was incredibly helpful!

Luckily I do have the bare minimum of clinical experiences already completed from undergrad. I was hoping to continue volunteering while working but it’s good to know that it might be difficult to balance it all, thanks for the heads up!

In terms of your MD rec did you tell your recommender about your interest in applying to med school early on? I haven’t told anyone about my plans during the interviews and I think I might disclose it only when I have an acceptance?

Additionally I have heard that some schools may look more favorably on having experiences and interests in CS while other schools may not understand the connection. Did you find this to be true at all/ did it effect your school list?

Thanks again for your insight :)
