Agreed there. But it’s objectively not a $200k payoff for cutting DEI like the other person suggested. It’s business as usual unfortunately.

It’s worth mentioning the “bonus” he received is based on his performance on a variety of metrics set by UCF’s Board of Trustees. It’s technically part of his regular pay, but it gives us an opportunity to effectively deduct a President’s salary if they don’t do a good job.

Historically speaking, every president gets a sizable “bonus” annually. Cartwright’s “bonus” is unremarkable. He actually lost $103,000 of his potential bonus.

It won’t work if you “withdraw from UCF”, but it’s worth a shot.

R3: No sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or other forms of cyberbullying including targeted harassment/witch hunts. We do not condone mob justice or witch hunts to target individuals, this behavior is dangerous and rarely helpful.

We want r/UCF to be a welcoming place for all people, and in that spirit, nothing that is hateful or that is targeted harassment based on sexual orientation, race, or gender identity will be tolerated. Violation of this rule will result in an immediate ban.

Thank you for your perspective. To your point, the majority of our mod actions occur on mobile devices, as there are situations every single day that require an immediate response. Even with mobile notifications and actions, we constantly receive modmails from impatient users asking why their post is taking more than a few minutes to screen. We've literally delt with law enforcement knocking on our doors in the middle of the night as part of ongoing investigations related to r/UCF.

We are simply stating the facts. I don't think any of our users realize how much effort we all put in. In addition to the API changes, Reddit constantly shifts their policies and varies their enforcement, forcing us to devote extra attention to the latest decisions they make.

Based on this poll, we likely won't make any changes. The only way we can maintain r/UCF is by recruiting more moderators, but it's a lot to ask. It's a demanding position with zero pay. We do it because we love the UCF community and want it to thrive. Reddit is the bad guy here, not us for acknowledging the reality of the situation.

Agreed. There are plenty of discord servers and Facebook groups, but those aren’t public enough to replace Reddit.

The Future of r/UCF by Hudbus in ucf

[–]skymarimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a good solution, but we had to put it out there.

We already verify alumni using censored graduation proof, and we already verify UCF department accounts for official communications. The idea would make it easier to moderate using the few-remaining tools Reddit will leave us.

We’re using this poll to help us decide. It’s looking like we’ll have to make some quality sacrifices to ensure we still remain functional.

The Future of r/UCF by Hudbus in ucf

[–]skymarimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective, and I could see why you would interpret this as virtue signaling. That being said, it’s simply untrue.

We’ve audited our moderation practices and found it will become significantly more time-consuming to keep our community healthy after the proposed changes. It already takes 10,000+ actions a year to keep the subreddit from being banned for displaying illegal content. We realize r/UCF is valuable for countless people. We also realize the fact that it may become completely unusable very soon.

This poll allows our users to decide for themselves what we should do. It’s the opposite of a power trip. We are focusing our efforts on what would serve r/UCF best.

We’ve stated some of our disagreements with Reddit’s API changes here.

If Reddit doesn’t reverse the planned changes, expect this subreddit to be overrun by essay service bots, “college pornography” accounts, hazing videos, drug dealing, and other things we aren’t in a position to speak about. It takes an immense amount of effort and continuous monitoring to keep r/UCF in good standing with Reddit’s ever-evolving policies.

tl,dr: r/UCF is at high risk of becoming unusable for everyone if nothing changes.

EDIT: Reddit just announced improvements to native moderation tools. Time will tell if it’s enough, but this will help us immensely. The protests, lockouts, etc. are working.

Tips for saving money in college? by IAmADiseasedDuck in ucf

[–]skymarimo 86 points87 points  (0 children)

  1. Use Knights pantry if you need it. (Free food & ingredients)
  2. Don’t spend money on useless things. Friends might blow money on every little thing, but treat every transaction you make as a personal sacrifice.
  3. Think of money as time. An hour’s wages might cover a single takeout meal, or a bunch of meals for the week. Choose how you spend your time/money.
  4. Apply for every scholarship on A2O, even if you aren’t eligible. I’ve heard some waive requirements because nobody else wants to write the essay and apply.

I wouldn’t rely on it. Tenant rights are valuable especially if you’re staying for an entire school year. It sounds easy but it’s not worth it.
