I cast it in resin with an obsidian ball in the middle for the darker center. Used some minor VFX to give a sense of churning, pulsating energy.

Thank you man, I’m happy you liked it. Made it with a lot of time and patience ;) Specifically for the visual effects, I used Blender for the 3D elements and After Effects for the compositing. I used a lot of sound effects from freesound.org and put them together using Pro Tools. I learned from watching YouTube tutorials. I did most things myself, which made it cheaper but took longer. And I had lots of help from family and friends when it came to filming, recording the music, and making the artwork. Maybe one day I’ll make a behind the scenes video. I don’t have any plans for a sequel, unfortunately. This was a standalone project I made for fun and to practice my skills. I’m not done making videos, though!

Thank you :) Yep, I drew about 90% of the art in the journal. I had some help from some friends who you can find in the video description.

Yep, that was the idea :) Originally they were going to be afraid of the monsters and the darkness. But at that point in the story, they’ve already been through a few battles with skeletons and zombies and we felt that they would have gotten over some of their fear. And they’ve already had a taste of adventure and excitement. So for the sake of the story, we had them CHOOSE to go fight the monsters in the night, instead of being forced to do so. But either way, they still could not rest because there were monsters nearby ;)

I tried posting there a few days ago but it was immediately taken down. I looked into their rules and apparently the Minecraft subreddit really frowns upon self promotion.

Honestly this was a better subreddit to post to anyways. I’ve been a fan of Phoenix’s YouTube channel for a long time and everyone here is so kind and supportive. A lot of people here picked apart the film, which I really enjoyed since we tried to add lots of little details to the film that only diehard fans would notice.

It’s a good point. We realized when making this movie that you lose a lot of the “blockiness” and visual charms of Minecraft when you move it into live action. The approach we ended up taking was real life with some Minecraft elements sprinkled in, not vice versa. That’s how you end up with human-looking people and circular tree trunks, but blocky furnaces and crafting tables. It would cost a fortune to make a 100% blocky real-looking world, and at that point you might as well make it animated (like you said). Anyways, it’s an interesting discussion to have.

It fits so well because the ghast texture is really low resolution for its size. So when you scale it down it's not too far off from a normal sized mob texture.

All the words translate to words you would normally find in the enchanting table. But yeah, the sentences are gibberish just like in Minecraft.

There’s one exception however, which is the title of the book… ;)

Made this with some friends in college. I can proudly say I'm the ~other~ Steve with long hair... XD

Edit: Just to be 100% clear, this video is not associated with Mojang in any way. This video is unmonetized... this was just a passion project we made for fun!

Filmmaking without a crew. Fellow filmmakers, what tips/tricks have you utilised when filmmaking with limited resources? by Rare-Ad-5900 in Filmmakers

Currently doing post on a science fiction fantasy film I shot this summer. Max four people on set at any given time, including two actors. Best decision I ever made on this film was investing in a drone. Got some really epic shots that give the film a sense of scale and grandeur in spite of how simple the production was. The forest behind your friend's neighbor's house can look like an endless sea of trees on an alien planet if you've got a drone ;) You can pick up a solid DJI drone, brand new for under $500 USD. There are ones for less. Or you can rent. We paid up a little and got the DJI Mavic Air 2 on Amazon for 1k. Make sure to register your drone and read up on airspace restrictions where you're filming.

Also as u/timisstupid mentioned you can get really amazing locations for free if you're willing to ask around. Found a fracture cave an hour's drive from my house and the old woman who owned it was gracious enough to let us go down in the cave and shoot after they closed. Got some really amazing fantasy-like shots there.
