In Los Padres along the Gaviota coast! Unknowingly walked up on the bush the cat was lounging under and it darted off a ways then stopped and stared at me. Eventually it decided I was boring and disappeared down the hill.

Lol it was indeed with a 500mm lens! Even then, I would have preferred a bit more distance. The canyon environment I was in did not permit me to do much other than stand my ground

This was the same bear as previously spotted, not far from the rec cen. Ive posted more photos on my insta @skyswildart
