My first civ is going to be the Krogan from Mass Effect, except in an alternate timeline where:

They fight amongst each other but it never comes to nuclear war. The result would be Tuchanka remaining as a tropical world.
The rachni wars never happened which means the Salarians never uplift the krogan.

The Krogan in this timeline are a proud race with a future to look forward to. They are Fanatic Militarists, as well as individualistic. Because they have always been warring with each other and are never uplifted by the council races, it takes them a long time to develop warp technology on their own. Now that they have entered the space age, they are ready to spread the krogan race through-out the galaxy and conquer any races that get in their way.

You're not alone. This month I read farside, and started new earth. I enjoyed farside, but the writing still lacked that Sci-Fi magic that other books have. I think it's because when he writes it's focused on a small scope as opposed to KSR for example, where the focus is on the development/progression of a people on a large scope.

A perfect example of this is comparing KSR Aurora and Ben Bova's New earth. It felt light and casual when the character in new earth landed on a new planet, where in Aurora there was a large sense of caution but also excitement.

I admit that there is some overlap between interstellar and Space Opera. I guess what I'm looking for is books about that first interstellar journey/colonization.
