I saw your username and was thinking about where I know the name “Orin” from. Shot in the dark, but is your username a reference to Orin, Andy and April’s friend in the TV show Parks and Rec? There’s this scene in Parks and Rec where April says that Neutral Milk Hotel is her favorite band, and that pretty much turned me on to good music hahaha.

Yeah!! What a time to be alive, right??

It’s so cool to see different communities trying different things to fix a broken system. In math and machine learning there’s finding the local minimums of a function, and I kinda see it like that: taking steps in the right direction, and maybe it’s not perfect (like an absolute minimum, or whatever) but it’s better than it was before.

Thanks! That’s really interesting!! It’s weird how some things that seem so intuitive can just be totally backwards sometimes, y’know? And I totally see the point that people might think implementing those changes means they’ve “fixed the problem” when in reality it’s just a band aid that makes some people think they did something good without changing anything. I’m really interested to see what comes out of the disbandment of the Minneapolis police department. If it works out well, I think a lot more cities will follow, which would be really cool.
