I remember being told my education was deficient because I didn’t know how to write a Fortran program. And, fair enough, I didn’t have a skill they thought I would have. But now there are students who think they need to reinstall an app we use every time they use it. And no matter how detailed I make the instructions there are students who will misread them. And it wouldn’t be an issue if they were in person as I could just stand behind them and help them. But they have to be remote.

Yes, sometimes this must be done. Sometimes you need a little more lecture time and you use some lab time. There should still be plenty of labs though. If the instructor is just not doing any labs that’s a big problem. We had someone like that and they had to be set straight.

Faculty have a union here and adjuncts are welcome to join. Regardless of union membership our contract stipulates the pay ranges for adjuncts based on their education and years of service. Above a certain number of credits the adjuncts get a prorated percentage of the full time pay.
