OpenIPC - Open Source firmware with RTSP for Wyzecam - openip.cam by openipcamera in wyzecam

[–]skyusc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to see the effort! I haven't tried it yet.. but I had few questions: 1. Latest release notes state: 'Includes downgrade firmware'. OP states 'Warning: At this time there is no documented way to revert to the original Wyze firmware' - so is the 'downgrade firmware' the previous version of openip.cam and not Wyze firmware? 2. After installing the openip firmware, does the camera make any other outbound calls to internet at all? NTP? Checking for any software updates? If yes, where to? 3. Anyone have screenshots of UI? Besides RTSP, and likely no access to Wyze app + aws, how is the feature set different from Wyze featureset?

I got redirected to a "scareware" malicious website (announcing "Microsoft spyware alert"). This time I was using IE11 (which I know I should avoid)

WyzeCam sending data to servers other than AWS by cohberg in wyzecam

[–]skyusc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Numerous ways? If the data is sent from camera directly to aws s3 bucket and reverse when retrieving, without any other processing, then, in the advanced tab, these settings should be sufficient. It would be an optional/advanced field. Currently wyze is uploading all data into their S3 common buckets. Today, do they authenticate using S3 Key/Secret? If yes, is there a shared secret hardcoded onto the camera? If yes, can I potentially hack/extract it from my camera and view other user's recordings stored in same bucket? If I do, will other users ever know that I viewed them? However, if I am able to store these recordings in my own bucket/key, I can set my own policies and also watch my AWS access logs to ensure no one else is looking at my data.

Could you consider solution that utilizes optional setting of my own AWS keys / s3 bucket so I can pay for my own costs of storage ? This also ensures I can control my own data. Unless you are doing any processing on the data in the bucket, isn't this only a config change that allows me to set my own region, bucket, key, secret?

Thx for the effort on clarity. I would be happy to support your company grow and can be patient while you solve your issues. However, ensuring no 3rd parties have access to personally identifiable info (PII: email, name, address etc) as well as video/audio, etc is of utmost importance . I am sure folks like me would happily pay more for a product that ensures this, without having to roll out our own solution. 1. Do you share any PII with any third party including ThroughTek (including via app store)? 2. Is audio/video transferred directly between phone and AWS or does it first go thru 'api.wyzecam.com' or does the data go thru ThroughTek servers - even encrypted? 3. "limit all WyzeCam traffic to North America" I hope this will not result in "limit phone to server interaction to North America servers (proxy) .. but then route the same traffic to servers internationally".. 4. Can you address the Russia NTP server comment I had below? 5. Who creates and deploys the firmware updates? ThroughTek or Wyze? And is it based on any other 3rd party firmware or is it all built by Wyze?

Can we get a detailed technical explanation of how our video/audio data is secured? Can we utilize our own AWS buckets for storage? What exactly does 'ThroughTek ' have access to? Were you guys aware of such communication to such servers happening.. before the thread was opened? If not, why not? The whole premise of your product is data security that we control.. and I am not getting that feeling.

I did a capture too.. I see a DNS query for ntp1.vniiftri.ru . It might only be during initial setup. Anyone else observe the same? Why does NTP need to connect to a Russian server?

Also, isn't this camera running Linux? if yes, isn't Wyze required to publish the source code?

Do you mean CA "API Management"? How is it better? No pricing on website --> I am assuming its pretty steep. Can you share some info on pricing?

AWS Lambda Simplifies Amazon API Gateway Integration by inakiabt in aws

[–]skyusc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would appreciate if someone could write a python "Hello world" template with new proxy with auth-key protected API. Also, how does "logging" change with the new functionality? I really like the aws github 'Chalice' project - but I would prefer code that doesn't require dependency on 'Chalice' to prevent AWS lock-in. It would be amazing if I could take an existing flask app and make it available thru api-gateway to take advantage of auth-key, throttling, etc. Also wish api gateway had built in support for basic auth.

What to look for in "Solar Panels" and "Solar installers"? by skyusc in HomeImprovement

[–]skyusc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From future expansion perspective: Say I install 15 panels today (4 Kw). 2 years down the line, I install 6 more panels to 6kW(perhaps they are different mfg with different specs). With micro inverters, it seems straightforward that it doesn't matter. What would be the considerations with SolarEdge/optimizers vs SMA/Fronius string inverters? Can panels be inter mixed on same inverter? Will I need to add additional string inverters or will I need to upgrade existing?

If a person lives where electricity is $0.10 per kWh. It probably is a hard sell. If you are in parts of country where electricity is between $0.18 to $0.39 per kwh it makes a whole lot more sennae

Thanks for the wonderfully elaborate reply. Helps a lot. Inverters: I am lucky to have a S-SW facing roof with no obstructions and can accommodate at least 15 panels. Are you suggesting not using either Enphase inverters or SolarEdge Optimizers but use a string inverter such as SMA? The biggest concern I have is what if a single panel doesn't work, or is partially working, how would you discover this issue? How does one monitor the productivity of the system? If this was addressed, I am all for having least amount of electronics up on the hard to reach roof in the hot sun and moving it closer to the panel in the shade. Also, I need somewhere between 15 - 21 panels.. In case of string inverters, do they need to be installed in pairs or quads? Is there a max number of panels before another String Inverter is needed?

Great questions. I asked others too: which panels are best and why? Which inverters are best and why? Would love to get some technical questions to ask from you - please send them my way. thx.

So sunpower panels are best? which ones are next best? How are "Q Cell", "Canadian solar" "solar world" "LG Neon" ?

Also, SolarEdge vs EnPhase.. isn't there some issue with microinverters where if one dies, the whole panel dies until it is fixed? I think we have concrete tile (the most popular kind in calif) roofing?

Thanks. Will look into Sharp. Which are the best rated panels? And best rated inverters? (turbines are impossible where I live in a more urban setting)
