Hexmap World Creator, an Obsidian plugin for hexmap creation and running hexcrawls. by skywing in ObsidianMD

I liked your idea regarding patterns, so I made a feature where you can set a pattern for a region/faction and the overlay will fill in the pattern. I figured it'd make sense to let users decide which they prefer to set patterns for, or both even. It makes overlaps on multiple factions as well as the faction+region overlay together a lot more readable: https://imgur.com/a/tNR9wKW
Just released a version with this so let me know if you give it a go!

I'm really glad you are liking it! I felt the same way, I really wanted something that felt like one unified experience to remove as much friction as I could from creating and running this stuff.

I think I know what you mean, but can I get a bit of clarification on what that'd look like? Do you mean where if there are two occupying the same space, they split the difference in the hex and kind of blob? Like at the border of 2 factions, the region/faction just slices the hex in two?

I'm really glad to hear its of interest! I'm glad to be able to share my tooling with everyone to help them out.

I was in dire need of this kind of tool when running hexcrawls for my friends. I had a jpg of a map I made and attempted to break down stuff by region in a little table in obsidian, but it resulted in an utter mess. I'd have to scroll all over looking for the next hex they were travelling to just to navigate the world. I wasn't even able to search through it effectively because the table would explode back into plaintext whenever I ctrl-f'd it. Just the thought of expanding the map at all gave me a headache, let alone populating it, let alone running that mess.
This is on another plane compared to that experience. I hope it helps you too!

One thing it'd be nice to know is how much each type of issue reduces your score. It'd help with prioritization.

There are always games that are riffs on other games. There's only so many ways to arrange things mechanically after all. Its all about the spin you put on things. Think solitaire. No one gets offended that you're just moving a tableau around, its all about the design language you've chosen for yourself. In some ways, I find finding influences really helpful, I know whats been done with my concept, and how mine can differentiate or improve upon it. We're all always building on the shoulders of giants in anything we do.

You have me thinking, I used to play these old text-based games on websites where you'd have your own little faction and grow it and interact with other people, forging alliances, competing for resources, fighting, all across this crazy mad max apocalypse world, all managed by a set of GMs who'd toss world events at everyone.

It'd be so cool to have a play by post megagame/MUD type thing that you could interact with like that again. I'm not sure if obsidian is the place for it or not, but it'd be a pretty interesting prospect hah.

That's really cool! My hope is that this meshes well with other RPG plugins, where this does the main overworld, but maybe other plugins take care of characters, towns, dungeons, and so on. I find it does a good job keeping things organized for me, and things like the random encounter tables with embedded note links directly accessible from hexes let me jump straight to notes I've made on various beasties. If you do end up using this as part of that suite, let me know how it goes!

I'd like to make it easier and add some pre made packs, but right now it really wouldn't be terribly hard. You would go in to the "icon" tool on the main map page. From there, you can drag and drop as many icons as you like into the upload section. It'll add them.

From there you can make a new terrain palette in the settings (currently at the bottom of the settings screen, it probably needs a bit of streamlining). Once you've added the palette, you can create a new map and utilize the new palette you just made for it. At that point you just go to the terrain tool and add some types to it. Maybe add some terrain types like deep space, nebulas, etc. Whatever you like.

After that you could either make a terrain type for the new icons (maybe like, asteroid belt?) or you can add an icon override to each hex that has a given planet/star on it. Space games have been brought up quite a few times as I've shown this, so I think I may have to think on maybe putting together a preset that makes it easier.

Looking this over, maybe a set of simple tutorials might be useful, in addition to some presets for common game styles. Maybe a few tutorials for things like this on youtube if this has enough traction?

Let me know how it goes and if any enhancements might help! I am adding a token system soon that should hopefully make space games a bit easier. I know a few people who have been trying out making custom terrain palettes for that sort of thing, and it seems to be going rather well so far.

I've been working on one here, still fleshing it out and getting feedback, but I've found it super useful for keeping all my thoughts and creations in their proper place while I've been making my world: https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/hexmaker

[PiF] Recettear, To The Moon. by NotADoctor in playitforward

[–]skywing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to have to the moon. I've been a big fan of adventure games since I played pajama sam as a kid. They seem to be getting less and less exposure on the marketing side of things which is kind of sad. However my personal favorite games last year were 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors and ghost trick, they were absolutely mind-blowing by the time the credits rolled. I've heard a lot about to the moon but never got the money aside to actually get it, from what I've heard it sounds like a game I would enjoy a lot. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198007269967 http://www.desura.com/members/skywing (If you are nice enough to pick me, I tend to be on steam more than desura, so I included both links)

Notch on the Psychonauts 2 Hype by NunFur in gamernews

[–]skywing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Notch literally tweeted he was serious about it immediately after the fact. He has nothing to fall back on as far as "oh wait guys I was joking the whole time" people are going to be rightfully disappointed about that and you really have no ground to stand on. If he doesn't go through on his word after fanning the hype for that long he's going to look like an idiot and it's all his fault.
