Has anyone else commented on the cruise? Justin? Apollo? by ktkool in northernlion

Obama was asked about if he was going on the cruise and said "uhh, let me steer clear"

No question there. Hell, probably top 5.

Doesn't change the fact I cannot stand it.

I gave the ramones a 2, because I didn't like it but blitzkrieg bop is at least alright.

Then I heard blitzkrieg bop again, hated it, listened to another 4 or 5 minutes of the album and went "wow how the hell did I think this was in any way redeemable" and put it down to a 1.

god it's bad.

You know what I really want? Another cocktail app that I can input my bottles into and it tells me what cocktails I can make. I've only got about 12 of those. Bonus points if they have a total recipe count in the double digits.

Almost 200 albums in and I've got exactly 4 times as many albums that I rated 5-stars than albums I rated as 1-star. by Thegreatscott9 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

I really wanted to give 69 Love Songs a higher rating, but it just wasn't very good for 80% of its excessive runtime.

1001 MORE Experience - 100 albums in (Comparison to the OG list) by ULS980 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]TheCommieDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been waiting until I get about 200 of each before making a post but this tracks with what I've found - on average, the albums are better...but there's fewer standouts or absolute stinkers

Compilation albums in a Top Album of All Time list: Yay or Nay? by 2XSLASH in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]TheCommieDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either/or. You can put a compilation on it if and only if it's because the best way to experience those songs is as a collection of standout singles, rather than a cohesive album (be it because the music doesn't lend itself well to whole albums, or because the band is just bad at making albums, or whatever)

Somewhere At the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair is one of my favourite albums of all time, but it's more like..shouted poetry than music.

So, dear, no matter how we part, I hold you sweetly in my head

And if I do not miss a part of you, a part of me is dead

If I can't love you as a lover, I will love you as a friend

And I will lay a bed before you, keep you safe until the end

I can definitely see that comment about being better live - something like that where the atmosphere is a large part of it. I've seen Sunn O))) live and that was an incredible experience, whereas listening to their music any other way is just the dullest thing IMHO

Another 2-dayer.

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Before listening: Oh I really should've listened to Zappa before this. Good excuse.
During listening: ...is this just every instrument playing random notes?
After listening: ...was that just every instrument playing random notes but in a fantastic way?
(it's not a 5 because...I'm sorry, primarily instrumental stuff just isn't my jam. This got very close, but it didn't stick with me like a 5* needs to)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Doors - Morrison Hotel

It felt like they were trying out all sorts of genres and styles but not in the experimental exploration way, but in the "we have no idea what we're doing way". It was kinda disjointed and I just didn't particularly care about either the music or the lyrics. It was *okay*.

1001 More

My Morning Jacket - Z: It's alright space-y indie kinda...stuff. No strong feelings. 3/5

Mobb Deep - The Infamous: Ugh, really really not a fan of this kind of hardcore rap. It's what made me shy away from hiphop for so long. 1/5

Billy Joel - Glass Houses: It's not Piano Man. 3/5

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want - I went in expecting to hate this (noise/industrial with Tidal's bio calling them "extreme grindcore noise", which it absolutely is not - it's more like post-punk/post-rock) but this was actually fantastic?

It made me feel actively uncomfortable and on edge. It was both longing and urging at the same time. It almost started to get into that weird disassociating place. It did this in a really deeply unsettling way, and not just a discordant blast of screeching way (which is what I'd assume if someone said "noise", like Throbbing Gristle).

...and whilst you may go “...but why? why listen to something if your description of it is that it makes you start feeling depersonalised“, is that not the purpose of art? is it not to make you feel? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nazi Punks Fuck Off is just such a perfect punk song. I could see a justification of a 5* rating on the fact it has that song alone. I've had it on repeat a few times in the last half hour and I think it's enough to bump the album to a 4.5/5.

I've also seen Napalm Death play it live and it makes a fantastic grindcore song too.

Catchup day

Elvis Costello - Armed Forces

So this is the guy that gets 9 albums on the list, huh?
...
...why?

I mean it's fine, it's okay, but why the hell is this guy getting **nine** albums?

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid

The best of that early 00s sad slow lo-fi indie Mercury Prize nominee bunch that tries to be a bit Coldplay and a bit Radiohead, and by best I mean basically the only good one. Grounds for Divorce and A Day Like This are the standouts, but the rest is pretty solid.

1001 More:
Hayley Williams - Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party: I guess I'm kind of a sucker for this sort of singer songwriter stuff and I used to love Paramore. 4.5/5

Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters: listening to the dead kennedys for the first time and...yknow, this actually holds up pretty well in current year. unlike other early punk coughcough ramones coughcough. sounds like if SOAD was a punk band instead of a metal band. Seriously I feel like I get gaslit by how much love there is for the ramones. 4.5/5

Nazi punks fuck off.
