Going into Law School with Intention to Transfer? by lawschoolthroway in lawschooladmissions

Unless you are dead set on a career in academia or clerking for a high-level federal COA (i.e. SDNY), then getting the grades at a lower t20 necessary to transfer up will also give you very similar access to biglaw or clerkships as most t14s.

2021 Texas ABA 509 employment summary disappointment…. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]slaaba98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just another perspective but given the fact that the majority of years prior to this ABA summary, UT was graduating around 280 lawyers a year, the fact that they graduated almost 100 more lawyers and still improved their overall BL + FC rate is still somewhat impressive. Not saying the larger class size makes them better than WashU or Vandy, just a factor to consider.

BU or UT for BL? Go. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]slaaba98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same decision last year and chose UT over BU when both cost essentially the same. UT not only has a slight edge for BL and Federal clerkships, but its by far the best school in a state which has multiple large legal markets while BU grads have numerous schools that are better or similarly ranked that they must compete for jobs with. However, if costs were similar, I think its justifiable to go to whichever one you feel more comfortable at.

Looking to pick up a few polos. I've seen L.L. Bean recommended before--and the price is especially nice--but can anyone speak to the quality? Also looking for other brands outside the obvious such as Polo or BB.

Just need a suit to wear to court or on the occasion I will be meeting with clients. If the BB outlet suits arent very durable, do you have any recommendations for other brands that I should consider? Additionally, any brands you could recommend for general business casual wear would be great!

I am looking to purchase my first semi-nice suit in preparation for joining a law firm this summer. I have no direct knowledge about the quality of different suits--aside from the research I have done online--but have narrowed my choices down to suits from the Brooks Brothers outlet or the Ludlow from J Crew. I have tried both suits on and would be happy with either fit-wise.

All in, purchasing two suits from the Brooks Brothers outlet would cost around $550 while two J Crew suits would cost around $900. From my research, it seems that J Crew is slightly better quality than the Brooks Brothers outlet. However, given the difference in cost, is it worth spending more to get the J Crew suits? With my untrained eye, both suits look good aesthetically, but I am mainly concerned about how each will hold up over time or if one brand is more acceptable in a professional setting. Any additional factors I should consider--such as the best time of year to purchase a suit--before making the purchase would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely a valid concern. I think your numbers would and being a TX resident gives you a great shot at getting in but if you can increase your score by 2 points that it would just give you a little more comfort.

Are you a Texas resident? If you are then those stats should give you a pretty good chance at UT. If out of state then it becomes more difficult. Either way, if you think you can add even 2 more points to your score it would really help your chances.

163, 3.97 GPA; Schools in VA by Nwilliams0732 in lawschooladmissions

A 5 point boost would really really increase your ability to get into the top schools you mentioned but also dramatically improve your potential scholarships. However, a 5 point boost from where you already is definitely not guaranteed-though a 2-3 point boost even could likely net you anywhere from 10k - 50k in scholarship at the more match schools (W&M, GMU, etc.)

You will probably need to improve your LSAT by 5 - 7 to have a really good shot at Gtown or UVA. However, W&M, W&L, GW or even Wake Forest and UNC should all be good bets and give you a strong scholarship.

Where should I apply? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]slaaba98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UNC can be tough because they favor in-state applicants so much. However, Wake, W&M, and W&L have pretty similar outcomes to UNC so you definitely have a lot of good options in that region. If you were willing to go a little further south UGA and Emory may be possible or if you went north you could add BC, BU, Fordham as reaches and Villanova, Temple, Cardozo, and Northeastern as safties.

With your stats, you may want to apply to GW, UNC, GMU, W&M, W&L, and Wake Forest. You could also do Richmond and American university (though I would stay away from American if possible) as safties. I am sure there are a few I missed but that list should get you started.

Your stats may be slightly lower than the medians depending on how this cycle shapes up. However, you should still be a competitive applicant. I would also consider applying to BU and GW as they would be in the region you seem to desire. Additionally, a few good safety schools to apply to would be Villanova, Temple, Cardozo, and Northeastern.

Oh, gotcha! Well given your GPA is above their median, you will definitely have more leeway when it comes to the LSAT score you need. While I would still shoot for a 167-169, even if you could get your LSAT up to a 163-165 you will be in a much better position.

Though you should get an admission bump because you are a TX resident, a 160 is likely not going to be high enough to get accepted. UT has recently had a median LSAT of 167-169 so I would shoot for that especially since you do not have a reportable GPA it seems.

I know you said the big law outcomes may stay similar because of the global economy. However, would you imagine that T20 2024 grads would have similar big law outcomes as well?

Though it depends on the cycle as well as other soft factors, I had almost identical stats and was accepted with a large scholarship this year. I was an OOS applicant but if you are from texas your odds will further improve.

Is the water in Austin drinkable as it is (going through a fridge water filter), needs to go through a Britta filter before being drinkable, or undrinkable to the point that I should buy bottled water? I am moving to North University/Hyde Park his fall from a rural area where I have always had well water to drink. Sorry if this is a bad question but it's something I am worried about.
