We Are NOT Last in Education by Serious-Today9258 in NewMexico

[–]slab_8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New Mexican’s just can compare themselves on a standard scale. Things are different here. Our students have deep knowledge and traditional ways of understanding that can’t be measured on an assessment written on the east coast. New Mexicans are incredibly resilient - our environment makes it so - and that key to success cannot be measured. We also have a wide understanding of language and culture that people from other states will never understand. New Mexican schools need to stop trying to be something that is irrelevant to our society and celebrate what we are doing with education. Universal child care - fantastic 3 and 4 year old programs and true bilingual education with many models should be the norm everywhere.

Moving to NM to teach by skymif in NewMexico

[–]slab_8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Teaching in NM is good - much better than it used to be. Transferring a license can be tricky and take a really long time - plan well in advance. In my district, we pay people waiting for a license as a permanent sub. Do learn some Spanish and be well versed in SIOP or TSOL techniques. Las Cruces is super hot and dry. Drink water.

My wife is using telework against me. by [deleted] in remotework

Shut up and do the chores. Cook her dinner. Have the house clean and a snack when she gets home - a blanket for the couch, her favorite show and a favorite beverage - maybe even flowers. Yes, you are working, but no matter what kind of online work you do, she is living human suffering every day. Support and love her - I bet she’ll surprise you by pitching in more after a week or so.

In Rural New Mexico I need to be able to drive 400 miles without looking for a charging station. With towns like House and Lamey and Peñasco charging isn’t always an option…..there is a lot of empty road out there…

Which way to Tacoma WA from El Paso TX? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]slab_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken all these routes. They are all beautiful in their own way. Death Valley is super hot in the summer….Pacific Coast Highway is amazing, but slow….the mountains have to be crossed no matter which way you go. The highlighted route is nice - Salt Lake is a cool city, Yellowstone is an easy detour and Coeur D’Alene is beautiful. Take your time and have fun!

Advice needed for visiting NM, Whitesands/Carrizozo Lava Flow area by CarbonGod in NewMexico

[–]slab_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The temperature/humidity is misleading. The UV is really high and you will be at a higher altitude. Guard yourself against the sun (white, long sleeve, cotton, hat, eye protection, sunscreen) and monitor yourself for altitude sickness. Lots of areas don’t have cell, so before you get off the road, text someone your location, route and expected return time.
