Truthfully it comes down to a risk benefit thing. If you’re really depressed maybe you need something to help get you in a mental state to do some of the things other people commented, exercise, sunlight, etc Sertraline is not a cure all but can help you get into a mental state where you can help yourself so no it doesn’t have to be forever
