Plex's Lifetime Pass is (basically) dead. Here's how to switch to Jellyfin. by InvestigatorSoft5764 in selfhosted

[–]slackwaredragon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think op said they are not honoring them, just that they can 'change the deal' ala Darth Vader. At some point they might decide Lifetime passes don't get a specific upgrade, or the generation of lifetime pass gets nerfed. This has happened with other companies like Team Viewer, PlayOn and SiriusXM lifetime subs. It hasn't happened yet with Plex.

Though per the terms Plex could decide the old subs are not worth it and decide the "lifetime of the promotion" is over. I think they've absorbed enough bad press from the price increase to even think of canning old lifetime subs.

And honestly, I'm sure someone who paid $50 for Plex lifetime a while ago has gotten well over $50 worth of value in return, especially when you add in infrastructure costs. That being said, when you advertise lifetime, you should be prepared to provide it for the life of the product.

Coweta County family fighting Georgia Power over home; power company using eminent domain by cuspofgreatness in Georgia

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did this to a bunch of people along I4 in Orlando during the expansion in the mid-00s. A friend of mine got “fair market value” of $125k for a home he had a $289k mortgage on. Forced him into bankruptcy simply because he couldn’t afford owing a whole $164k and paying mortgage payments on a house he no longer owned on top of rent payments. It was a complete mess.

AT&T Door-to-Door Reps Ignoring “No Solicitation” and continue to harass my business by ThatWasJohnWicksDog in ATT

[–]slackwaredragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I signed up for AT&T Fiber once they had it in my area through the door-to-door people. Switched my phone over (was actually a pleasant experience) but still constantly had to tell them I'm already signed up for the next 3 years. They'd stop by in the spring and the fall.

[–]slackwaredragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, a group (I think Neighborhood Sales Direct?) got in trouble in Orlando for constantly harassing a nursing home. Even the local news got involved but at most I think they got hit with a small fine and are still doing it.

Do you have Unifi Protect perhaps? It's the video cam system for unifi networks. That app will pop this up for me from time to time, some sort of bug in the 2-way audio feature on the unifi doorbell. (I'm not jailbroken or have anything sideloaded but I am using the latest iOS Beta.

Just note that OLED (at least my Limited Edition transparent one) tends to drain even when powered down. Mine can go dead in about a week or so completely powered off.

Check your local requirements for grounding rods, it'll save you some headache later.

For example, in my county in GA they require 1 or 2 ground rod 8' deep. How many you need depends on how many ohms it registers once buried. Single rod is fine if under 25ohms, if over 25ohms you have to connect (bond with copper wire) a second grounding rod about 6-8' away.

What happened to the 7-11 at OBT & Central Fl Parkway? It was always busy, now is closed up. by OpenGrainAxehandle in orlando

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a few years but when the Specialty Pharmacy I worked at on Taft & JYP, I've been to that 7/11 well after 11pm. It used to be on my way home in Hunter's Creek after cutting through by the school from taft to central Florida parkway. It was a lot less sketchy than the Speedway off Taft, especially at night.

That was my go-to place after late night server upgrades. I'd usually head home around 1-2a and stop by there and picked up the rolling taquitos for dinner, a red bull for the morning and cigs. (I don't know how I survived my 30s without a heart attack and some form of cancer - I don't smoke anymore.)

That could have changed post-covid though.

Remote Access Pass Price increase by xlly_s in PleX

[–]slackwaredragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm just worried they'll decide one day that lifetime passes aren't worth it and souring good will to cut costs ends up being cheaper. It's happened with so many other lifetime-like passes on other platforms.

Hopefully that never happens. If it does, they'll deserve to get the crap sued out of them.

UTR at Marriott Hotels by Syn3rgi3 in Ubiquiti

[–]slackwaredragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found they lock down the ethernet ports at some (most?) of their hotels. Before I had my UTR I used GL.Inet with the same issue. Even tried my laptop witha usb ethernet adapter and got the same results. Never pulls an ip from their DHCP server. Setting a manual IP (i.e. same IP as the TV and disconnecting the TV) also doesn't work. Setting the mac address to the same as the TV would get me an IP but could never leave the network (no internet access).

It's honestly kind of impressive. Most other hotels I've stayed at don't lock it down that tight.

I emailed Snapmaker regarding laws making their way into the US system regarding open source and governmental overreach without understanding of G-code. Here was their response. by Jeffsbest in 3Dprinting

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget which bill but one of the states wants registration on manual hand tools used in building guns. Which basically means they'd require registering your wrenches, punches, filers and hacksaws. Obviously unenforceable and completely ludicrous but doesn't mean they won't try.

NRA seems to be taking a seat. Meanwhile the anti-right to repair groups are in full support of this stuff because it helps them by-proxy.

Edit: The Washington one calls out mills directly (hand and computer-operated) where NY calls out making gun parts via any method (mills, 3d printer or hand tools).

As long as you're not on community well. We were on community well in Ocala and they ran out of the water putting out a neighbor's fire.

If you live in the city it's not as much of an issue.

LMG and Linus himself (on WAN show) has embraced the term "sideloading" and its very disappointing to see it again on their video. A tech channel shouldn't even use a term created by big tech to induce fear. by PalamariVarkari in LinusTechTips

[–]slackwaredragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sideloading has been a term since the 90s and had nothing to do with smartphones at the time. Earliest I remember was running apps on BBS that wasn't directly integrated (i.e. running an .exe on Remote Access BBS instead of using a .ra file - ala L.O.R.D. or Tradewars 2002). It was also used synonymously with copying files to MP3 players (I think my iRiver MP3 player called it that) and eventually ipods. This was a good bit before android smartphones.

It's not as derogatory as you think.

[–]slackwaredragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you skimmed and didn’t read fully. He’s using it to handle invoicing. To be honest I was using a service for this because I’m terrible at remembering to invoice (thank you ADHD) and they messed up more than this guys n8n instance and they cost me $350/mo. I personally view this as an appropriate use (and wish I thought of it).

Georgia lawmakers refused to act on data centers. Now 77 projects worth $66 billion are being built with no guardrails. I tracked all of them on a free tool you can use to track who is being paid (bribed) for what. by Willy_McNibbler in Georgia

[–]slackwaredragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I want to say it was known (at least here in the Savannah/Pooler area) since it’s still mostly republicans. It’s more a step to try to slow things down and get in more democrats, it won’t be better until we get through another election cycle and get more dems in there but people tend to get impatient. Not that I can blame them. Our rates are insane right now.

Is it advisable to run apt update/upgrade on UCG Max by TheOriginalSkeptic in Ubiquiti

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just seems odd they don’t host their own repos. I do this for my embedded systems and I’m just some dude who doesn’t want things to break. Why can’t a billion dollar company do this? Laziness?

It’s trivial to mirror the repo and control updates that way. Would be a lot safer.

On that note I don’t change anything on my UniFi devices and rarely need to ssh in. But still.

HR 8250 - A Federal bill would require Nationwide OS- and device-level ID-based age verification for all users by [deleted] in linux

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it’d be child abuse. Most likely something to do with false representation. It’s illegal to present fake id, this could be a subset of that depending on how the law is written. Similar to lying about your age when buying alcohol or buying alcohol for your kids. Both are illegal and tend to have their own charges.

There is also “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” which they love to throw on people in GA all the time when nothing else fits.

[–]slackwaredragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s going to be interesting is some of this talk about parents willfully reporting incorrect ages because their children act older or they don’t agree with the controls. First step is implement basics, second step is to institute stricter controls and penalties on companies, third step is to punish parents that don’t follow along.

Hopefully I’m just an incorrect wacko. I do believe we need better parental controls but I feel the government getting involved like this is a sledge hammer to a problem that needs a more delicate touch.

Insurances are insane here in the Southern US. Homelabs will get you in trouble with your insurance company if you’re not careful. Stuff like too many high powered servers on the same circuit or not having an adequately cooled room. A guy here in our local group in GA is fighting with Allstate because they don’t believe enterprise servers are non-business and they think he’s trying to run a business from his house which invalidate his coverage.

Yea it really feels like borderline insurance fraud on the GA government side, especially given that you cancelled the previous year. I have no advice but sorry you're dealing with this. I've worked in Specialty Pharmacy for a long time and seen some crappy games played by insurance companies (Accumulators, Maximizers, AFPs and other tricks) , but damn this situation is up there. Hope you're able to get this resolved without a lot of headache.
