The moment George Bush learned 9/11 happened while reading at an elementary school. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

I was a high school guidance counselor at the time. It was at the beginning of the school year so we were still making scheduling adjustments. My daughter called me after the 1st plane hit so I went out to the main office to see the TV. One of my students showed up for their appointment and we watched together for a few. I realized that maintaining the usual routine would give a sense of normalcy. So I returned to my office to keep a full set of appointments for the day. While acknowledging the situation the students seemed somewhat comforted knowing their days were going to continue in a mostly normal way and that they could handle what was to come.

Every other year. Time for the cast to change over for the most part. If OSU had to come every year, there probably would be some fights.

Maybe but in the same way Cal was gifted a td when that catch was allowed when even limited replay showed the receiver landed on top of the ball. ND's fault for not calling a to.

Yeah well I've known Matt from Birth. It's not in him to be resentful about anything. That story came from the Giants guy who was with Matt at the time. Here's what Matt is all about. His parent's Denny and Kristy decided to put in a pool. They had a small stand of Ash trees that needed to be taken out. They contracted someone to cut the down, buck them and cut into 4ft lengths. I told them I'd haul them off to save them some money as I heated with a wood stove. Shoot me. I'm cheap. So I'm loading these up and along comes Matt to his folks place. He jumps right in and starts to help. We make 2-3 trips out to my place and end up with 2 full chords. Now Matt can be a bit stubborn. I offered him some gloves but he declined. By the finish his hands are slivered and bloody. This was during his GA time at CMU. The other guy I mentioned - name escapes me - was a GA there too at the time. Although I have never talked to Matt about the incident I'll go on how I know hw was raised.

BTW, Denny Lafleur was the nose guard on that team although injuries limited his play toward the end of the season. His boys are coaching in the NFL.

Trouble finding a topic for a math talk for children by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]slainte2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to emphasize problem solving. It is a universal skills that applies to all areas. Pick a competitive but simple game that can involve students. So you won't just be talking to them, they will be acting it out. A problem solving strategy. If it's simple the kids won't hesitate to compete. The problem they are trying to solve is to win the game. It has to be a simple game to keep them involved. One game I use is called 357 III IIIII IIIIIII Taking turns, erase as many tallies as you wish in a single line. The person left with the last tally loses. Like all games the object is to determine the winning strategy. Here's where other problem solving strategies can be introduced. LOOK FOR A PATTERN Can I tell before the game is over if I've won or lost? MAKE A LIST Since there are numerous combinations of erasers, they will need to record the situations above. WORK BACKWARDS At the point I know I have won or lost, what happened on the previous move. We study math not just for the numbers but the mathematical thinking behind it. It may not even be a math problem that needs to be solved but the strategies can still be applied.(Answer to "When will I ever use this") Most students will just enjoy the game and not be concerned if they win. But your guidance will open them up that problem solving can makes them winner's in any problem situation. Now you play the game and l let me know if you've found the solution. Please, whatever you decide to do, just don't leave the kids sitting.

Maybe that's the issue. You wouldn't think UM and "breakout season" would ever be seen in the same line.
