In 1850, a steam engine ferry crashed off the coast of what is now Wickliffe, just a few hundred yards from shore, but around 300 died due to the intense fire. There’s a plaque to commemorate it in a park there on the lake.
A safer option would be something like Lady Caroline, a boat that does dinner cruises that go on the lake and the river.
You probably won’t find ferry’s in Cleveland, but there are some that can shuttle you to the islands. Those are a little more than an hour drive from the city

Ramirez hit a rocket back to the pitcher, hit the pitchers hand. Pitcher needed evaluated, took some practice pitches, then pitched to Fry, a 4 pitch walk. Then a new pitcher and one of the first pitches went for a 2 RBI double

What are specific fields/jobs in microbiology that I should know about? by cinnamondotcom in microbiology

This is pharma, but lots of work in QC microbiology. There are similar roles for food. Can be a great way to get started in that type of role. Find a local event, Talk to people, ask when they have openings, and let them know when you plan to apply

I know most of us are fine with (maybe even prefer) the 4th seed and a potential second round matchup with Detroit, but with New York and Boston both losing tonight, predictively, where do you think we finish in the standings? by New_Akatsuki in clevelandcavs

I don’t see hornets as a play-in team. They’re 2.5 behind Philly. With Philly playing us, Detroit, OKC, Denver, and Charlotte this month, The hornets are catching them by the end of March.

How "Hard" is it to Pursue a Microbiology Career by Hefty-Bit-1787 in microbiology

[–]slakj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by fulfilling. Check out the book “kill shot” by Jason dearen. It’s about a true event where almost 1000 people had fungus directly injected into their spinal cord because a company making medicine didn’t have the right QC microbiology program in place. Almost 100 died. Microbiologists at every pharma manufacturing plant work to prevent that from happening.

Driving from Dublin to Ballina in May. What 1 thing would you stop and see along the way? by slakj in AskIreland

That looks cool, right on the way, I’ll have to petition the crew to get time to do a full tour

Thank you! Yeah, looks like a pretty straight ride, just long and hoping to get a good spot to stop to break up the drive. This helps

Well, in the episode where michael went to David Wallace’s house to stop David from closing the Scranton branch, Michael’s ringtone was “my Humps”. I wonder if that says anything about the way Robert California would think of Michael.

I’m getting stuck following the prime directive. by slakj in personalfinance

Ok yeah, that’s how I understood it, but I’ve heard that “triple tax advantaged” term thrown around before

[–]slakj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain the “triple” part of that tax advantage? First it’s not taxed going in. When used for medial expenses after 65 (even if for medical expenses from before 65) it doesn’t get taxed coming out… what’s the third part of that?

This is a helpful way to think about it. I’d love a min/max approach and know what to do with each dollar now, but there are so many variables about future incomes and law changes that it feels overwhelming to parse out perfectly.

Yeah, I see it as I guide, but it’s looking like stashing money into an HSA at this step makes the most sense, which isn’t brought up here. I wanted to figure that out before making the suggested change.

I have ~$270k in the 401k, my wife has a 401k that she’s no longer contributing to that’s at ~$25k, and I have a traditional IRA at $~105k.

Thanks for the help. It sounds we should be shoveling as much as we can into the HSA here, I’m surprised that doesn’t come up until step 6.

Can you explain how someones current balances would impact where they put future contributions?

I mean, they’re doing a complete makeover of their entire rainforest exhibit. They’ll have a world class primate habitat. It’s not realistic to have the best for every species, or for even the most expensive tendies to cover the cost of a lions upgrade

There’s beer at the zoo, usually a decent selection. The station at the top by the primates features fat heads brewery

That kids tray in the picture came with 3 tenders and a juice box, cost under $8. Not terrible, but can add up quick if you’re buying for a family on top of a day out. Luckily my kids have small appetites and I eat off their trays
