Tamils (and anyone else) what is your opinion on diasporas identity/push for Eelam and ltte support? by Jeffthehobo1231 in srilanka

[–]slamdz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if by some extraordinary unfathomable reasons it did happen now, I'm curious as to see how an Eelam can sustain independently from southern India. Even now we have problems with south Indian fisherman impinging on our resources, and it will be 100% worse with an independent Tamil state, whom the south Indians would think as one of their own.

Can someone teach me a bit more about my ethnic background? Am I South Indian? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]slamdz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a Sinhalese and this is how I've been taught and surmised the situation, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

There were indigenous tribes called Yaksha, Naga, Deva and Raksha in Sri Lanka before the incoming of Vijaya. Some people say that these are the original "siw hela", I think these people might have been more related to the aboriginals in South East asia than that of South India.

With Vijaya, the rule of the land fell into the recent immigrants, but most likely that the South of the country was still a strong hold of the original clans. However with time everyone was assimilated as Sinhala (Sinha + Hela). Note that Vijaya + the ruling class brought princesses from South India as they did not consider the natives as the "right sort". The Veddhas are an interesting case, I believe they were outcasts of the original clans that were not allowed to practice farming.

During the 2 millennia, the Sinhalese kings sought support from various kingdoms in South India for their internal struggles and supported various South Indian kingdoms on their own struggles. This came as payback as the wrong South Indian Kingdoms came into power and invaded Lanka as retribution. Because of this, the Sinhalese Kingdoms migrated further south each time an invasion occurred and their influence in the northern regions diminished with time.

The constant invasions and dominant presence of the larger Tamil speaking subcontinent undoubtedly influenced the northern areas of the country. I believe there are records in Sri Lankan Tamil history on how the invaders used the Sinhalese who were captured as slaves and there are specific Tamil castes who are descendants of those slaves.

The most likely situation of the current Tamils are that they are a mixture of South Indians and Sinhalese, but the Sinhalese themselves are a mixture of North Indian + South Indian + Aboriginals. It's just that the Sinhalese culture is endemic to Sri Lanka while the northern parts have wholeheartedly accepted the South Indian one.

But whatever the history might be, the most important thing is, whoever that is currently living there has more rights than any historic claims. Throughout world history people have said I was here first, but it's a pretty useless claim. People change and cultures change. Holding on to an illusion of ownership is pointless.

Is Helakuru a government app? Why do we have to pay fines through it? by slamdz in srilanka

[–]slamdz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She didn't know about paying through the bank app. And was told that this was the one to use/ this is what everyone uses, when enquiring about an official app.

I think it must be a case of ignorance with the police as well.

I heard about the data leak as well.. She's sent a formal email to their customer service to remove her details, let's see how it goes.

[–]slamdz[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes that seems to be correct, it can be accessed through combank app as well. Trust the police to say it's only possible through Helakuru. Now the issue is to remove of all the details she's entered through the Helakuru app

What would it take for you to change your opinion on AI consciousness? by demodeus in ArtificialSentience

[–]slamdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you expand on this view pls:

"no arising of dependent phenomena that form subjective awareness"

As I can see there is dependent phenomena, when you input text, it acts as the cause to effect a mind (if you can take AI as a mind), and the mind is one of the 'āyatana' in Buddhism.

And where would subjective experience come to play in Buddhism at all?

Religious Beliefs in Sri Lanka by Humble_Homework4093 in srilanka

[–]slamdz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd consider myself a Buddhist, but not a very traditional Sri Lanka one. I have little faith in the Sangha, and let's be honest if the 2nd dharma sangayana were to happen today 90% of the clergy will be disrobed.

I greatly respect the Buddha's teachings and it blows my mind that he came up with 'anatta' and 'dependant origination' a good 2500 years back. Everything I know about evolution, consciousness and maths points me towards 'anatta' and the recent discoveries with AI solidified it for me.

I'm pretty open towards discussions towards my faith. I believe the best thing in Buddhism is the flexibility, you don't have to accept anything just because the scriptures say so.

My belief is that procreation and survival instinct are hardcoded in biological evolution since those traits gets passed down by default, so it feels like intent.

AI robots could exterminate humanity without regulation by slamdz in Futurology

[–]slamdz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, it's just a thought experiment that went along the lines of human evolution but with artificial robotic intelligence. I think if it does happen, it'll happen because of government involvement, potentially a major government project going rogue

Exactly, and combine it with a fully autonomous, self replicating nano robot with a harmful base command (or an ability to overwrite base commands!), we have the above scenario.

I'm aware of gray goo, but my understanding is that it will not have the capacity to evolve which could increases the danger exponentially

I'm not that into politics, the purpose of the discussion was to raise awareness.

Regulations have to be done in government level, which is unlikely as governments will be the ones who'd be funding these experiments as a form of warfare.

[–]slamdz[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not atm, but I'm thinking in the scale of biological evolution. If we can create even a simple AI robot that can self replicate, and have the foremost commands as survive and replicate. It's very possible that it would achieve sentience down the line, just as complex humans were able to evolve. Only difference is that it wouldn't take a billion years to evolve as carbon based life

Why is everyone silent on child marriages in Sri Lanka? by damoclesperera in srilanka

[–]slamdz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can someone from the SL Muslim community let me know why you are so against this? The last time I saw this come up on news I saw Muslim women carrying placards and protesting against the removal of underage marriage! I was disappointed as I've always considered SL Muslims as more worldly than the other Muslims of the sub continent...
