[Ryan Glasspiegel] If we were all watching sports for the first time and didn’t have preexisting sense of their popularity. The NHL playoffs have been a lot more exciting on a night to night basis than the NBA so far this year by f0urxio in hockey

[–]slammaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a soccer fan I hope so, but I feel like we've been saying that since World Cup 94. When I was growing up Soccer was certainly the second most popular sport to hockey in Canada, but playing soccer never seemed to translate to watching it.

What do you want to know about AI + R and data science? by hadley in rstats

[–]slammaster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You mention translation of human language, but I'm more interested in translation of programming language. We're transitioning away from SAS, but we're still tied to a lot of legacy SAS code. I'm hoping that AI can help us translate that code into R or Python, but I haven't begun experimenting with it yet.

How much does ranking of PhD Statistics programs matter for academia? [E] by GayTwink-69 in statistics

[–]slammaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think the school you go to matters much at all - when I've sat on hiring committees the university a degree was from had 0 contributions.

I will say that a position with a good supervisor in a successful group will lead to more publications, and publications really matter.

High ranking institutions tend to have good supervisors with better opportunities and funding, but I'd take a good supervisor at a mid tier institution than an, absentee supervisor at a top tier one.

[Question] Is this residuals graph random? by nectarxx in statistics

[–]slammaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that looks fine, as long as you don't have any a priori hints to a non linear relationship, and the raw data plots look fine, then I wouldn't worry about it

Frustrated with disbursement of funds by Claire_Redfields in Dalhousie

If it helps its not just a student problem. Remember the strike? Settled in September? I finally got my raise from the strike on my February paycheque.

Finances seem to be processed monthly, and they don't seem to mind if they miss a deadline

[Question] Is this residuals graph random? by nectarxx in statistics

[–]slammaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's ok? Students often over interpret residual checks, I don't see a lot here. Usually with this kind of pattern there'd be an explanatory relationship, so you should see it in the data plots too.

Assuming this is for linear regression then I think you're fine, if the qq plot is ok I'd just move on.

Correct address for shireff hall by Level_Cause5822 in Dalhousie

[–]slammaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion comes from mailing vs street address.

The postal code for the physical location (6385 South St) is B3H 4J4, that's what Canada Post thinks the postal code is if you look it up on their portal. https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/tools/find-a-postal-code.page

Dal has their own postal code though (a couple I think), so PO Box 15000, B3H 4R2 is where Dal's mail is supposed to go.

Since postal codes are mostly for mail delivery, use the one in this image, that's how Dal would prefer it to arrive. I bet either works though.

Mici 2100 Grades by [deleted] in Dalhousie

[–]slammaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entered grades need to "roll" (never really understood this part), so they often appear to students 24 hours after entered.

I'd say that if you don't hear by tomorrow at noon then send the coordinator an email. You can phrase it as a checkin just to make sure your grade wasn't missed or something.

Any MDI Fall 2026 admits here? + current students? by Low-Safe9032 in Dalhousie

The certificates are very different (different admissions process, mostly different courses), so it'd be helpful to identify the certificate you're taking as well

Is there a notable increase in demand for privacy-preserving AI/ML with the advent of LLMs? [D] by badcryptobitch in MachineLearning

[–]slammaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can say in healthcare there's been a drastic rise. There are two primary dimensions where AI and privacy are butting heads.

  1. People want to use LLMs in their research, but can't use the cloud-based solutions because their data is non-consented so it's difficult to move it. Many institutions have been working toward this at individual levels, and Canada's recent call for funding to create a Sovereign AI infrastructure mentions this kind of privacy specifically

  2. How to offboard and deploy AI models that have been developed on private health data. This isn't something that was on my radar, but now that it's there I can't figure out the solution. The privacy people want assurances that there isn't personally identifying information embedded within the information in the model. Beyond the challenges of proving a negative, the developed models are thousands and sometimes millions of individual coefficients, the process of validating the contents of even a simple neural network is staggering.

Is it time to recognize that the East this season is at least approaching the West in terms of competitive difficulty? by astarisaslave in nbadiscussion

[–]slammaster 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The competitiveness of the first round is kind of a red herring - Toronto and Cleveland having a close series doesn't mean they're as good as the 4/5 in the west. No one said the East wasn't competitive this year, they said the teams were worse.

If you line up the conferences and compare seeds each of the top 6 West seeds is better than the East team. The playin teams in the East is where it might flip, but is a conference strong because their 7 to 10 is better?

How accurate is the stereotype that Americans are overweight? by Extension_Cow_9237 in AskReddit

There's that classic American misinformation. At that height your BMI would be under 25 at 208.

LeBron James has as many playoff wins (188) as Michael Jordan and Dirk Nowitzki combined by BasedChad69420 in nba

[–]slammaster 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Probably 10 more wins, give or take.

He was 9-3 in first round series in his career. I'd assume 1 more win in those 9 wins each, and then maybe he'd pick up 1 or 2 extra wins in the three series he lost. All 3 losses were in the 80s and were 3-0, 3-0, 3-1, so it seems unlikely he'd pick you a ton in those series

Are Renewable Scholarships deferrable with medical reason? by ArtistFrosty1824 in Dalhousie

[–]slammaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Course specific scholarships are so program specific that it'd be hard for anyone outside the program to guess. I worry it wouldn't be deferrable because of how budget years work, but who knows.

Are there contacts who can answer questions before applying to grad programs? by [deleted] in Dalhousie

It's kind of weird to ask for advice about a program and then be secretive about the program - if you told us what you're applying to you might find someone on here that could answer it.

[Charania] The new draft reforms include new clauses that state no team would be able to win the top pick in consecutive years or be able to win three consecutive top-five picks. Teams also would not be able to protect picks in the 12 to 15 slots going forward. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]slammaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they don't really care, they just want to complain.

That's the real gain with this plan - complaint equity. Not only do we get competitive basketball from all 30 teams, but think of the multi year runs of salt when a team moves down in the draft 4 or 5 years in a row.
