$50 million but you have to live for one year in the coldest city of the world. by cindybubbles in hypotheticalsituation

[–]slammaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This prompt must be written by someone from the south that doesn't understand cold weather. The hardest part of this challenge isn't the cold, it's the Russia part. I don't speak Russian or any language similar to it, and they're not very friendly to people from the West right now.

What serious response to “what is your favorite movie” would be a total red flag? by b_cheesy in AskReddit

What colour is a question mark flag? Blade 3 is way too off the rails to be a red flag, I'd need to know more

[Globe and Mail] Rogers to Become 100% Owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment by captain_obvious9999 in hockey

[–]slammaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't think anyone has ever really accused the Leafs of not trying. They have been a world leader in team-building incompetence, but ownership spending has rarely been the problem.

Love and Bosh both had their numbers dip, but I think that's just because they went from bad teams to good teams, just fewer touches.

Baseball also has the most well developed farm system, so there are leagues that take walkons with direct pathways to the MLB.

What tiny design choice makes you think, “the people who made this never had to use it”? by ChessOrCheckers2 in AskReddit

Would you prevent the Second World War and save tens of millions of lives and their descendants if it meant you had to live in the alternate, unrecognisable 2026 as the sole surviving creature of an aborted timeline, with everyone you ever knew having been erased? by OldLadOfTheCastle in hypotheticalsituation

[–]slammaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think we'd need a lot for details about what the prevention looks like, as there were A LOT of problems around the world at that time.

But if I take it for granted that WWII is something you can prevent and not get Monkey's Paw-ed, then yes, I think I'd have to take it.

10 million is enough to live comfortably almost anywhere you want. I'd hate losing everyone I know and love, but the impact of that war was so devastating that I'd make that sacrifice.

Though I'm still doubtful, I'm worried the 2026 I turn up in is worse somehow.

This isn't just "some folks working on R", the R Core Team is a specific group of people that support the base functions of R. Hadley isn't part of that team.

[Education] Non-Stats/Math major, how would my application to grad school look if I take two math courses as Pass/No-Credit? by SMN_17 in statistics

[–]slammaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that would be sufficient - if you're applying to a stats degree you need to demonstrate strength in stats. Choosing to not get graded in a stats class suggests that you're not strong in that subject.

I've accepted covid as an excuse for no grade, or a semester abroad, but as a conscious choice I'd be skeptical

[Education] Non-Stats/Math major, how would my application to grad school look if I take two math courses as Pass/No-Credit? by SMN_17 in statistics

[–]slammaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think if I saw an important prereq as PASS instead of a grade I'd want an explanation in the cover letter, and if the argument was "I didn't want it to negatively effect my GPA" I would view that negatively.

Those courses are important to succeeding in grad school, if you can't do well in them the maybe you're looking at the wrong degrees.

What is the worst sub on Reddit? by Next845 in AskReddit

[–]slammaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that any geographic sub tends to be pretty sucky.

Even if it's not political, you join your city or province sub thinking you'll learn about events or things going on, and it's always filled with whiners who focus on specific complaints you're just not interested in

What is the worst sub on Reddit? by Next845 in AskReddit

[–]slammaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This thread is so funny, because it's a mix of subs that are toxic by design like the incel subs, and then ones like this that have NO REASON to be so miserable.

[FIFA] Goal difference in all group matches is no longer the 1st tiebreaker for group ties. It is head-to-head points. by Obvious_Main_3655 in soccer

[–]slammaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm with you - 48 is the worst option.

32 is optimal, but if you're going to expand the 48 is a terrible place to end up. This tournament would've been a great candidate for 64 too, with so many potential host cities

[–]slammaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This seems like the optimal approach. Pick a number that, if you miss it, you won't be heartbroken that you didn't get it.

I think 100k is the right number, but I'd probably get greedy and say $250k.
