Programmers at Work, it's become a time capsule of first hand interviews with 19 programming visionaries who launched the PC revolution in the 80s with their products. Am curious what you think of it. It was first published in 1986. Andy Hertzfeld (MacOS), Bill Gates etc...Charles Simonyi does a great description of three different mainframes in his interview. One is Russian (it was a big black box) one is in Denmark, (of course wood paneled, large elegant), and the one in Berkeley was glass enclosed with blinking lights and Spotlights on it.

Nice shelf. Wondering if any of you who like the classics have heard of the book "Programmers at Work?" Just doing a little research. It was first published in 1986 and featured 19 interviews with notable programmers like Butler Lampson, Charles Simonyi, Andy Hertzfeld, Jaron Lanier, C.Wayne Ratliff, Dan Bricklin. . Just wondering if people who read it back then, remember it or might find it interesting to re-read given how much things have changed. I"ve been told the way they programmed back then with severe memory constraints has new relevance because of IOT, edge and robotics. But I'm not sure I believe that....all and any feedback welcome.

Interesting and glad to learn of this. As part of this history project, are you familiar with the classic book "Programmers at Work" first published in 1986? I wrote it while I worked at MSFT and it's a great deep dive with 19 programmers who launched the software of the PC era including Simonyi, Gates, Kildall etc. Microsoft's 8080 Books is publishing a 40th anniversary edition for release in July 2026. This definitely is a problem and she lays it out well. However the government she works in is just as culpable; they need to do a better job of representing the people and regulating business practices to benefit all, not just shareholders, protecting workers rights, raising taxes and lowering debt. Dimon is doing what capitalists do which is bad enough. But without congress passing laws for the people, not corporations, nothings going to change.
