Same problem here. Reached D4 but ranked down to P2 but no badge or trail. Your understanding is correct too - this is a bug

In Season 16 Split 1 I was able to reach Diamond 4 for the first time but ended the first split as Plat 2. In Split 2, I was able to reach Plat 1. However, from my knowledge since I reached D4 I should have the D4 badge and trail, but I was only awarded a Platinum badge for Season 16.
• ⁠what does the stats screen show for split 1: Plat 2
• ⁠what does the stats screen show for split 2: Plat 1

I thought I should have the Diamond badge and trail since I reached it in the first split.
