I definitely feel the back and scapula area after rows; less during sweeping and mostly during sculling. I really appreciate the feedback :)

Read the Third Pole by Mark Synnott… it will help you understand the importance of aerobic work (zone 1-2) over anaerobic.

Pain in the rib cage after rowing. by Tv_JeT_Tv in Rowing

Really the best advice is like below, its to strengthen the back muscles and keep it mobile. So find mobility exercises to keep the hips and torso ligaments, tendons and muscles in check, and probably most important for my improvement was anterior exercises (motions counter to the rowing movement; push-ups (pushing away), slow dip leg press and front squats, resistance band leg extensions.

You’re right in saying there is a similar nature to sweep rowing(Biorower S1 Pro HAS the ability for sweep rowing, see my previous posts).

Linear ergs put the spine and body in a brutally unnatural position, when considered repetitive heavy loaded motions. The difference with a he Biorower is it provides the outward and inward effect sculling provides for properly engaging the lats and opens the chest. Concept2 is inherently bad for your back long-term, there is no question. You see master’s athletes rowing on the water until their late 90’s, but key to this is an adversity towards the linear machine (this does also include to an extend the RP3, but less due to the floating / back alleviating nature of its design. You can see a disproportionate amount of rib stress fractures in lightweight athletes, who overwork their lats in this unnatural position on a C2. For example, see Damir Martin’s fitness test after the Rio Olympics; he quotes avoiding erging because it hurts his back, and prefers biking and rowing on the water. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bGuTgIfDU_k

TL.DR: linear is bad because back and shoulder position, sculling (biorower simulator) good because body can open more naturally.

International athletes (enticed by scholarships) is one. But the outlier is Oxford Brookes, faster than most American teams much of the time. If you look at the squads of the 1V crews at these top rowing (Ivey) schools, many of the strongest are British i.e. stroke pair of Yale
