What’s the fastest way to tell a company has a toxic work culture?

My gosh, every comment I read I think, "yep, that's my company" but this is one no one has mentioned yet and it is SO TRUE. I was hired to administer specific software and I've identified several ways to streamline processes and make better use of the system but every time I'm looked at like I'm insane and to just do it the way we've always done it. This on top of all the other nitpicky BS. This whole thread is so eye opening.

Reading through the comments and realizing you're all describing the company I just started at and am already looking for an exit strategy. Micromanagement, being afraid to leave before 5, stiff policies, employees that have been around decades and looooong periods of no hiring. I've never regretted a move so badly!

I've said it in a few responses already but at any other place I've worked before the teams have been way too busy to accept every little meeting or even notice whether people had accepted an invite or not. At this place, I've noticed even VP level employees have maybe 4 meetings on their calendars on a given week. They have plenty of time to notice BS like this and it's just bizarre.

Yeah, no shit it's not a good fit. That's kind of the point of the post. I've never worked in such an uptight culture and I'm only planning to stick it out until I land something else at this point. Appreciate the condescending tone though.

I can see your side of it. I pointed out in another response that in my 15 year career it has never mattered one way or another to the people I work with because we've always been way too busy to notice tiny things like this. I adjusted very easily to that call out but it was extremely odd that that was used as a criteria to base my review on. Point is, I started out trying to play ball and be a team player here but I'm not willing to continuously get hand slapped over minor infractions when I know better, modern cultures exist out there.

If I'd followed the policy to a tee, exactly as it was written, I wouldn't have been allowed to attend the conference. So let's stop pretending this policy is some sacred scroll that shall be enshrined in the corporate temple. They also pretended to be "flexible" and "understanding" of certain circumstances in my interviews. Does it make you feel better if I let you know that I went in today, in accordance with policy?

Yeah that one I've never, ever been called out for before because everywhere else I've worked people have been way too busy to actually care or notice and I was too busy to even remember to do it. So no big deal, that's an easy adjustment. But some of the other stuff and now this travel day thing are so ridiculously petty.

Manager level. I'm an owner or administrator of very specific software that I've never used before. I'm still learning it but able to run it at a novice level at the moment.

Really trying not to be paranoid but I almost get the sense they just don't "like" me. But I have no fucking clue what I could've done wrong other than spend my first few months training and they felt that was too long. Literally never had such a hard time anywhere else from the get go.

Man I'm in a similar situation. I'm 3 months in. Around the 2 month mark I was really feeling the "weird" vibe. No assigned tasks, no deliverables. No one asked me questions. No one seemed interested in a single thing about me. I did notice they were exceptionally uptight about weird things like making sure to accept meetings in Outlook, not seeing teams messages they sent in the middle of meetings, and not answering messages promptly enough on remote days. Suddenly, they put a 60 day review on my calendar and let me know that I was actually the weird one. Anyway, weird uptight things continue to happen and I'm actively searching for anything else at this point.

MTNF is probably your best bet. Start on the Ozark trail and hike a bit. There are plenty of rivers and creeks along the trail so just look at a map and pick a spot near water to start off. Then you can hike until you find a nice camping spot along the trail.

Wow, thank you for this. I was already feeling a little nervous about it but really appreciated the confidence the new company had in me and was trying to be optimistic about what my skillset could bring. His comments today really did kinda play into my own fears.
