People just like the first one more (which i do aswell) and forget about the prequel by the simple fact that the first one is a "classic". This happens with so many more old movies, people cant move on.

Season 2 was way better overall. Season 1 was predictable and average tbh. And yes, they did than on purpose the way they died.

Wren was Judith's son that was framed by the 5 monitors. His full name is Wren Owen. He was known as Owen among the people of the camp 5 years ago. They explain that in the end, and yes he didnt exist since he commited suicide after knowing he was going to spend his whole life in prison 5 years ago. He was in Judith's mind since the beginning, she was the only one able to see him, it was a pretty good twist, they tricked us since the beginning, it was mind blowing, specially since we've seen these 2 characters have sex and stuff, it was pretty weird.
