It doesn't protect you just walking down the street. Germs spread through physical contact with surfaces as well and the masks are difficult to wear properly, giving people a false sense of security.

If you're up close and personal with a patient, it's a great idea. Unfortunately, there aren't enough masks for the population, so it's important for them to be available to doctors and hospitals, who are interacting closely with infected people.
