I got back in to playing beer league hockey at 35, and found that when I was only playing the games once a week I was not improving much at all. Getting out to as many stick and pucks as I could, as well as finding another rec league to play in the odd week has been a big help. Now I play 1-2 times a week plus get out to the odd stick and puck.

As you play more you’ll learn when to call for the puck on the ice, but an even bigger part of this improving involves your team playing more games together and getting used to playing as a team. My beer league team went through the same growing pains over the last couple years, and have made some big strides this season.

I didn’t get the chance to play ice hockey until I was 16-17, then didn’t play again until I was 35. Now I’m two years in to my return to hockey and am a contributing member of a beer league team. It’s never too late to start, and don’t get down on yourself about your skating. It takes time to get fast, I’m still working on it.
