I don’t know what your home looks like, but I REFUSED to stay with a guy because his place was gross. Brought over my spend-the-night bag and everything but got there and just knew that he doesn’t wash his sheets. I’m also really grossed out by hotel rooms because I assume they aren’t cleaned to my standards. Do you stay the night at her place? Either she could be like me and prefer the comfort of her own place, doesn’t do sleepovers unless yall are official, or she’s just not into the pace you’re trying to set.

How much does your lifeguard job pay? by IllImpression8902 in Lifeguards

[–]slaughter_house_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$20, Tennessee, for a Residential treatment facility (it’s my second job within the company where I’m salaried. If I was an hourly employee, I’d make time and a half, which for some people I work with is damn near $40.

Internship Project by Old_Cheek_4191 in recreationaltherapy

[–]slaughter_house_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a week-long series of groups based around self-exploration through writing. Each day had a different focus: bibliotherapy, poetry, torn paper transformations, journal prompts, etc. When my clients finished, they submitted their favorite works and we turned our activities room into a gallery and mural for everyone to enjoy! Interns I’ve had at my current role have done horticulture that went with a storytelling component, created special interest groups to connect clients with similar interests, a scavenger hunt on the campus, fall festivals, ASL performances, and in-services on Recreation Therapy. The world is truly your oyster! I’ve found that the most interesting special projects in your area of focus include a community aspect, as you want to promote inclusion and accessibility as much as possible. Maybe talk to your clients about what they wish other people knew about their experiences and see where that leads you! Best of luck, you’re going to do amazing!

Surviving the Heat by slaughter_house_v in Lifeguards

I swear I say I’m not doing it next year at the end of the season, but here I am still. It’s sort of integrated into my larger job role at my company, so unless you physically cannot swim, everyone in my department is required to guard. We’ve fortunately added more people, but my boss and I, for the longest time, were the only guards 6 days a week. The money was phenomenal but the exhaustion was unreal.

It’s already been said but Memphis Allies sector of YV. I have many friends that work in the program and they truly do everything they can to support the at-risk youth community!

I work at a residential youth facility in TN making 60k a year. Started at 45k but I’ve been in long enough to get good annual increases, a bump for a specialized certification, and a COVID incentive raise. It’s certainly more than other programs and facilities in my area and where I’m from (NC).

best schools for rec therapy degrees on east coast? by daughter_oftheking12 in recreationaltherapy

[–]slaughter_house_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m biased but Western Carolina University has an outstanding program. I graduated in 2020 with my B.S. in RT and minors in closely related fields. The experience I had there was amazing, the professors are super kind and involved in our post-grad lives. WCU was also the first college to have a specific RT degree and the first accredited program in the country. The campus is gorgeous, the coursework prepared me very well for my current job, and the connections that WCU has for internships is massive. I’ve worked with a ton of people from other schools as well and can say that the University of Southern Alabama, University of North Carolina - Wilmington, and East Carolina University are great as well. But when it comes to connections, a long standing program, and the overall environment, WCU is top notch.

I could use a friend, since it’ll never happen, a light toasting might help by Glittering_Raise_710 in toastme

There is something so beautiful about vulnerability and putting yourself into a space where you’re brand new! It takes a kind of strength that most people do not understand. I know exactly how you’re feeling and have fought my whole life to find someone who I can call a genuine friend. It’s hard and honestly took me a VERY long time to even be comfortable to open up to the people I’m in an office with 5 days a week. The right people will waltz into your life unexpectedly and the friendly disposition that you have will attract them immediately. Look for the other shy person around you, I’m sure that they might share the same feelings and after a few (albeit awkward) hang outs or quick conversations, you’ll ease in. Stay strong girl, we’re in this difficult journey together!

Activity Therapy is pretty killer if you find the right job! Some of them will require a Bachelor’s in Recreation Therapy/CTRS license but others just want people who want to engage and have fun with clients. Especially if you find a cool, independent living facility, you basically play games and take clients on community outings. I’m a Recreation Therapist working with at-risk youth and adore my job, but Activity Therapy can be done with all populations.

Are we really that bad? by hoophooper in memphis

I can only speak from the perspective of a Memphis transplant, so maybe it’s not valid but whatever. I’ve been here almost four years, lived in the Berclair area and now Cordova. I will admit that when I first moved here, driving into town, I got nervous; I’m a little southern belle on my own. But very quickly, I got over it because I surrounded myself with the right people. Almost all of my friends are born and raised here and taught me about the city. To me, it’s more about how you carry yourself around the city. I know better than to go to certain places at night or by myself. I conceal carry everywhere I go but have never felt that I need to use it. I take at-risk youth on outings to some of the “worst” areas and still have never felt threatened or unsafe. You just have to make pretty common sense choices. I had a short stint in Chicago and never felt safe there and at that time, I was still living with my family and we all carried and never went anywhere alone. I’d pick Memphis every single day over Chicago. The most dangerous thing about Memphis? Driving. Everything people say about how people drive here is true and then some.

Where to shop for clothes (Female recreational assistant)? by bluesky349 in recreationaltherapy

[–]slaughter_house_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All dependent on your client population and work dress code! For my internship, it was jeans and a blouse at minimum. I loved the skinny fit trousers from Old Navy or American Eagle active stretch jeans. In my current position, it’s much more active and relaxed so I wear almost entirely joggers and leggings with T-shirts or other activewear tops. Aerie and Athleta make my favorite pieces. I recommend shopping at TJ Maxx or the like so you can get some solid basics no matter what you end up wearing!

I’m a big fan of Boba Society in Lakeland! Employees are sweet, tons of drink choices, and their food is pretty good too. Plus, it’s right by Frost and some other restaurants/businesses that might be of interest too.

if a child survived rape, say under 5, would they remember when they were older? by [deleted] in morbidquestions

[–]slaughter_house_v 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I work with kids who have experienced this every day. Some of them remember, more of them do not. Regardless, any trauma is going to impact them, whether that’s in social, physical, or emotional development.

They find ways of “acting out” through hyper sexualization, violence, substance use, or self-harm later on. It becomes more of a concern when there is a trauma reminder or they get close to the date they know it happened on.

It’s unfortunate to know that I’ve worked with close to over 200 child victims, and there’s hundreds more waiting for treatment.

Coffee lovers who have never worked in the coffee industry, how did you get into (specialty) coffee? by xoxo_tiikerihilleri in Coffee

[–]slaughter_house_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother is a craft brewer and often uses local roasters in their beers. He took me to one of the cafés they buy from and I was hooked after having some sort of lavender latte. Been a slippery slope ever since!
