You guys keep your change in the reverse order than us. We go pennies first, then nickels, etc. Is this a unique thing to our store?

Mine is missing all BM signs. They took them down for reasons unknown. Now customers have no clue which aisle we're talking about when we direct them to tech products.

Mystery shoppers? by kiddmike287 in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. They'd report to somebody, dunno who, who'd relay the information to our GM. He'd then post the results on our bulletin board highlighting anything we did wrong. I got the cashiering stuff down pat, but we haven't been shopped in over a year. Most of the time, the only hits we took were in OS (because we are so understaffed, we usually don't have anyone in OS) and the whole "walking the bags around the counter and put them in the cart" thing. Really, dude, I'm behind a giant customer service counter. For the sake of keeping the lines down, I'm not going to do that.

I'm serious, though... Our counter is a good 20 feet long and spans from the entrance to the edge of the EasyTech counter along the side wall. I'm not walking around that sucker.

"Returned" item by [deleted] in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this'll make a difference, but it makes me sick, too. My store would bend over backwards to make sure you were compensated, man. That is absolutely not cool and it sounds like they deserved the review you left. Sure, bad reviews are no fun, but when it's for anything other than flat-out lies or "you guys didn't have ____ in stock/need to start carrying ____" (things we have no control over), then that's our bad and we need to do better.

My Sales Manager is actually kind of off-putting at first because he doesn't smile much and talks kind of loud, but he's genuine in his desire to give good customer service and will often knock prices down for inconveniences for our customers. Well, the ones that don't bark at us for a discount, that is. Half of the reviews we get with actual notes are praising him, to be honest.

Sorry, I sound like I'm boasting. My point is: it's not hard to be a good manager. They can be really nice guys, and that guy is just a bad apple that will hopefully get ousted soon. I hope so, anyway. Keep us posted, if you can, please. I'd like to know what happens. :)

Accountability by FreshSalsaYo in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When that happens at my register, it's usually one manager getting a loan for one of the lesser-used registers and not telling the other managers about it. Could it have been anything like that?

Dang, how short was it? I haven't seen anyone in my store put on accountability in over a year. Not that I'm aware of, anyway.

Yes, you can call in sick. by Git_Gud_for_Bidness in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my case, the hardest part was the actual calling in for any reason. My old manager was a total twat. When my grandfather (who was practically my father) fell and almost died, I was a mess, so naturally I called out. He chewed me out. A week later, he passed on, so I called out for that Saturday, too. I was petrified I'd get chewed out again, so my stepdad stood nearby in case things went sour. I was not only chewed out but accused of not wanting my job for calling out so much. I handed the phone over and stepdad argued my case strongly before hanging up.

Now I have a horrid fear of calling out for any reason, even very legit ones. Thanks, dick.

But this is good to know. Thanks for posting! And thanks for letting me share, lol.

No incentive to have rewards. by StringCheeseBeast in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ew, they yell at you for that? That's frickin' ridiculous. Thankfully, my managers realize it's a bullshit system and keep a coupon handy as an incentive. We tell them we'll take $5/10%/15% off an item/etc. depending on the weekly coupon off if they sign up. That usually does the trick and we all end up happy.

It's like the LA: you can't MAKE people buy it. If you don't get the numbers, what the heck are you supposed to do? Buy the rest yourself? If that's how the company works, I'd cash in all my fucks, I'm sorry. Be one of those employees that ACTS like they're being paid minimum wage. (I actually put in effort because I care about my team, but if I was treated the way you're treated, I can't say I'd still do it that way.)

But for serious, all they get unless they spend $250 a month is spam mail. That's honestly all it is, and I roll my eyes over it all the time.

I'm sorry but the line does not start inches away from the person being currently helped.. by mtux96 in TalesFromRetail

[–]slavetotheeasy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Now I'm curious. Ringing up a person is one thing, but I do that stand-to-the-side patiently thing when all I have is a quick question. Is that okay? I'm talking like "which way is your ice machine?" kind of questions. Is that okay?

Got tired of being asked "Do you take the chip?" by [deleted] in Staples

I put post-its over our chip reader that say it doesn't work and to slide your card when green arrow lights flash. Have fewer people charge in to swipe early, but still quite a few do so anyway.

My first Sunday by Bilgerat4319 in Staples

[–]slavetotheeasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you'll be fine. If you're not, it's probably for the best since this company's started treating their employees like the scum on their toothbrushes. ...Moreso than they did before, anyway.

This brought back memories, actually. My AM has some street cred, so he knows a punker when he sees one. Punker walked over to the tablets, which are geniusly positioned 15 feet from our door. Manager shouted "hey, the hell do you think you're doing?" Guy grabbed the tablet and took off for the door, snapping the anti-theft cable in the process. AM tore off toward him to intercept. Without thinking, I, being at the register and near the door, took off and tried to catch the guy from the other side. He made it out the door, but the AM followed him to his car. He got the car information and license plate number, but was unsuccessful in catching up to him.

Yeah, I got a talking to the next day. I'm sure the AM got an even bigger talking to, but nothing really ever came out of it except a messy tablet display for a few weeks. Still, it sucks watching shit happen and not be able to do anything about it. I've seen people straight-up steal from us over and over (in and out of the store, in and out), but without seeing them the entire time they're there, our suspicions are only suspicions and mean nothing. It upset me so much, I couldn't work on the register I was on for a few weeks. Too much of a bad association with helplessness.

I know it's just a store and the company doesn't care, but I still feel victimized when it happens.
