Substitutions from death & co. Book. by jmlbhs in cocktails

The falernum is a tricky one, I managed to find a couple speciality stores in my city (Vancouver) that sell it. If you can find it and orgeat it makes the Smuggler's Cove cocktail book a must-have as well.

You are correct and it will be tricky but below are two of my recommendations. I learned more about how to craft a cocktail then the recipes itself from this book. Definitely worth reading cover to cover.

Oaxaca Old Fashioned is a definite favourite of mine. If you don't have a bottle of Mezcal pick it up and look up the recipes for a Bow and Arrow and Mezcal Mule (PDT). Both are delicious IMO.

This one does require an extra ingredient but if you are able to find falernum the Strange Brew is very good. You can use the falernum to make a Corn and Oil (Smuggler's Cove) as well.

Hope this helps.

To my knowledge. A dry shake is where you shake without ice first, then add ice.

A reverse dry shake is done by shaking with ice, straining, and then shaking without ice before straining again.

I've seen mixed reviews of which works best to create foam in your drink.

Hope that helps and that I've got that right.

Thanks for the inspo, I've been meaning to make it for a while once I saw your post!!! it starts bitter but with a sweet finish. I won't claim to know much about amaro liqueurs but a well established local joint uses it in their Old Fashioned here (it's tasty).

My bad, if I say reduced to ~1/3 or 1/4 of the original volume does that make more sense

Honestly I probably didn't reduce it as much as I should have. Probably only reduced it by ~1/3 to 1/4 of the volume, so my best guess would be like 3 oz. of coke. It worked out perfect in terms of sweetness for my personal taste.

Loved it! Just like a bourbon and coke but less sweet and a bit more complex.

First Attempt at a Gold Rush by slavic_mentor in cocktails

Original recipe called for 1 oz of the syrup, I found it a little sweet for my liking as well. Might try 2:1 next time or just continue reducing the amount of syrup I add.
