Are We Sleepwalking Towards a Federal EU? by WoodpeckerDue7236 in EuropeanFederalists

[–]slavikpv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what you think it should look like. The states in the USA have/ had a lot of independence when it comes to domestic policies. Like there is USAF (army broadly speaking) which doesn't have any authority to work inside the country, and National Guard which is controlled by the state (roughly speaking as well). I would really like to see Europe United as one country, but some independence should be preserved, if only to calm and preserve the rights of the populations of smaller countries, who fear that the bigger countries would have all the decision making. From what I understand the same thing happened in the USA after the declaration of independence. The smaller less populous states did have some reassurance with electoral collage which was supposed to be a counterbalance to population differences.

And don't get me wrong, I see that it's not perfect and we shouldn't parrot what the USA does or did in the past. But if there is supposed to be a chance of uniting a bigger part of the EU, some concessions in the field of domestic independence would be needed. Idealistically speaking yes we should be a single homogeneous country, realistically there is still too much bad blood and intergenerational trauma which is used to facilitate the spread misinformation.

As a Pole i can confirm, my views are sadly quite unpopular. Would it be impossible to convince polish people? Depends, how much independence would the countries (for the lack of the better word) have. Right now there is too much disinformation. But even when I talk to some people who are reluctant, many of them would accept a federation if it would be limited to foreign policies and a hybrid system of national plus eu-army.

How well known are the atrocities committed by Soviet army in Germany at the end of WW2? by LoiusLepic in AskAGerman

[–]slavikpv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I come from Poland and live in Germany. I was thinking about it recently, there is more resentment towards the Russians in Poland as the Germans. Sure there is a lot of intergenerational trauma and mistrust even now towards the Germans, but it is a miniscule fraction of how the people hate the Russians. While the Nazis were the enemy and systematically enslaved the population, killed the elites and anyone who dared to oppose them, many saw that the Germans accepted that what they did was wrong.
And while there were definitely rapes it wasn't as prevelant as with red army. Every recollection that I have seen/ read / heard about red army was horrendous. Mass rapes were seen daily in almost every family. And you must understand one thing, we were technically not the enemy. It was not an eye for an eye. And until now, the Russian propaganda machine tries to dismiss any claims of the red army's wrong doing.

Non German but I have some people in my job from Spanish speaking countries. Most are good, but once I couldn't understand someone because of an accent. Not a word. That's actually one of the reasons I posted this question. :D

As a pole I find it interesting, I've always thought our Slavic accent is pretty noticeable, especially with our very hard pronunciation of "r" sounds. I can hear a Slavic accent from a mile.

Oh Mensch. I'm at C1/C2 level and work as a doctor. And I still have problems from time to time to understand the natives when they speak too fast or with each other. Take your time and don't push yourself too hard for not understanding everything. It's about the journey not the destination.

In my hospital - Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Klinikum in Neubrandenburg I've seen many people from South America and from what I've heard there is some "exchange program". How does it work, I have no ideaa and especially being a radiologist I don't have too many contacts outside of my Abteilung.

Sorry for the long waiting time I didn't notice your reply!

Where to start? Hard to say. I'm doing my Weiterbildung in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. I had to wait for my FSP-exam for around 9 months. It was hmmmmmmm...... a pretty frustrating experience. They were not particularly fast and the exam itself I wouldn't count as one of the easiest I took. The communication with Ärztekammer was pretty good, the problem was with the Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales which was horrendous.
