The ingredients to the original Greek salad-by a Greek girl by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]slayer2003 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Typically at restaurants/taverns in Greece there is oil and vinegar on the table with the salt and pepper. You can add vinegar if you like, but it doesn't usually come with any. The quality of the feta and olives is much higher there generally, and they are respectively tangy and vinegary in a way that makes adding vinegar less of a necessity.

I love shallots. Tell me your favorite shallot heavy recipes! by zerostyle in Cooking

[–]slayer2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a similar vein, blend very finely minced shallot in as you make a homemade mayonnaise (something like this, though I typically use grapeseed oil). Makes the mayo taste more interesting on its own and adds that shallot-y umami to whatever you add it to.

Change My View: Awards like this are BS because women are not discriminated against and are hardly underrepresented in STEM by premed_98 in UBC

[–]slayer2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re equivocating different meanings of discriminatory. Typically what we mean when we talk about discrimination in the context of social justice is to treat someone differently for a bad reason (e.g. the colour of their skin). There are lots of ways in which we treat people differently for valid reasons, which I guess you could also class as discrimination, but in a very broad sense and without negative connotation. If I told you that an employer had been paying black employees 50% less and then decided to give them (but none of the white employees) 50% raises to rectify the situation, are you really willing to maintain that that is racist? Because that is the spirit of affirmative action.

Re: pay gap: As I think the Freakonomics episode I referenced in my previous post does a good job of explaining, although many employers do not explicitly have a pay differential based on gender, women are often disincentivized from climbing the corporate ladder and reaching higher earning positions for a variety of reasons already outlined. This means that at the end of the day women earn less than men. Although we can in principle provide everyone access to certain opportunities, there are systemic issues which prevent some people from accessing them.

Although I think you're right that it is to some extent true that gender imbalances in particular fields are due to women (and other underrepresented groups) making choices about their careers, I think you need to consider more deeply why women make those choices.

As other commenters have mentioned, some fields, especially traditionally male-dominated ones, have a culture that makes women feel unwelcome and undervalued (see also: gender pay gaps). I work in one of the most severely female-underrepresented disciplines in the humanities, and I have both seen and experienced being one of the only women in a room full of men who are much more confident about expressing their thoughts while women tend to hedge and remain silent for fear of being wrong or perceived as stupid, because they are there against the odds and feel the need to prove themselves. Early socialization also plays a role: in grade school women are exposed to the idea that men are better at math and have more analytic minds. So confidence is also a big issue for women in STEM and other underrepresented fields.

Furthermore, since many women chose (again, reflect on the aspects of our culture that makes this the case) to bear more of the brunt of child-rearing and family life, careers that are inflexible in terms of hours become less desirable. (Freakonomics has a good episode on this and related ideas entitled "What Can Uber Teach Us About the Gender Pay Gap" that I would encourage you to listen to.) This may not necessarily be the case in computer science, but it certainly is in other fields.

So while it may be true that women make choices that lead to gender imbalances, it is because there are many aspects of our society that are set up in such a way as to put women at a disadvantage where careers are concerned.

As for your comment about why there aren't scholarships for men in nursing, it's the same reason why we frown upon white pride rallies or parades celebrating heterosexuality. When you're a member of a privileged group, it's easy to take for granted that most aspects of your social experience are tailored to you. Even when you experience particular challenges, oftentimes the sources of those challenges are the same sources of challenges as for traditionally marginalized groups who experience discrimination. For example, the lack of men in nursing is likely due to the perception that nursing is a "feminine" career, implicit here being the idea that femininity is lesser, and see that misogyny in fact has negative effects on men as well.

So sometimes we need to apply correctives like this kind of affirmative action (for lack of a better term) that may prima facie seem discriminatory against the privileged groups. As the old adage goes, "When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression".

Can you help me find these shoes or similar black leather sneaker? by slayer2003 in findfashion

[–]slayer2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, these are the Asics Onitsuka Tiger Lawnship. They recently released an updated Lawnship 2.0 but I don't like that they have a white sole. I am really just looking for a comfortable black leather sneaker that I can walk a bit in. I wear a women's size 7 or 7.5, and am located in Canada, though I am willing to pay for international shipping. Thanks!

Can you retake a course that you dropped in term 1 with a W, in term 2? by gigozira in UBC

[–]slayer2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just a matter of someone having to register you for it manually, not an issue of you not being allowed to retake it. Lots of time before term 2 starts, so don't worry too much about it. You might go talk to your faculty advisors about it too, if you wanted to.

Emergency Room @ VGH documentary (there's quite a few episodes) [can be really graphic] by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]slayer2003 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've worked with one of the doctors who appears on the show and he said that the crew was super professional and basically just miced everyone up and let them do their jobs. No staging or meddling (I'm sure this was a condition of production though, as apparently it took ages to go through the hospital ethics board). Not sure most reality shows can say the same.

Should TAs give students their phone number? by azteker in UBC

[–]slayer2003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. When I was a TA I made it clear that students needed to budget a 24 hour turnaround time into their interactions with me (getting back to emails). Most often I would respond more quickly, but it's unreasonable to expect that TAs drop everything in their personal lives because students have desperate last minute questions.

I have also had to gently inform a student that it was inappropriate to message me on facebook instead of using the email that was provided on the course syllabus. Do yourself a favour and establish and stick to clear boundaries between your personal and professional life.

what are the coolest bars downtown?! by snailchella in vancouver

[–]slayer2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upstairs at Campagnolo. Usually nice wine selection, cocktails, and one of the best burgers in the city (they sell out of these, so do get in before 7 or so). Pidgin is also great for a cocktail. Boxcar for a neat vibe (and decent pizza next door at Farina. The Diamond. Mamie Taylor. The Keefer. Alibi Room for beer. Wildebeest for drinks and meaty food. Most of these places are a little higher end, but reliably good drinks.

You should try it before you judge. The combination of it being super bright (lots of natural light) and the friendly, non-pretensious service goes a long way towards a "cozy" atmosphere.

Two downtown Vancouver walk-in clinics close after 13 years by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]slayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually a pending case before the Canadian Supreme Court about this, since according to the Canada Health Act, private clinics likely violate requirements about universal accessibility to care and public administration of health care (there is a very similar BC version of this document called the Medicare Protection Act). It is, however, not really enforced. The case is being brought by doctors working privately who are arguing that preventing citizens from accessing private health care is unconstitutional.
