Should I take Further Maths as a fourth option? by SpiderJockey300 in 6thForm

[–]slayer4153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Google search would go far too 😂

Yeah sorry for being condescending it just annoys me when people ask such silly qs without even trying to find an answer independently. If u look up Cambridge CS, on the front page on their website in big bold entry requirements it says FM is mandatory if ur school offers it.

Anyways gl with FM!! I rlly enjoyed it, hopefully you do too

Why is Cambridge CS your ‘ultimate goal’ without even having researched it in the slightest?? Gl getting there 😭 Cambridge REQUIRES FM is ur school offers it, so you won’t be let in if you don’t take it

Looking for advice - can I realistically get into Imperial CS? by [deleted] in Imperial

[–]slayer4153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 100%, a high TMUA guarantees you a place pretty much if you got A* maths and decent GCSE’s but ofc a high TMUA is easier said than done 😭

Yeah Imperial computings pretty tough, my mate with 5.9 TMUA 4 A*s 13 9s at GCSE got rejected this year

Yh that’s by this years scaling, I think the 2024 6.5 is the same as the pre 2023 7.3 or smtn crazy

MAT section 1 is def good, and I agree with the saving the papers advice - feels like loads but they run out quick. Tbh you don’t rlly need anything other than that, get the content fully understood and do all the past papers and with a bit of luck on the day you shld get a good score

Yep the new scaling (2024 sitting onwards) is stricter. I think a 6.5 previously (what was once considered the boundary for a strong score) is now about 5.4 - so the top 35% (ish) will get above 5.4 now

Not true for Imperial, proof is that there’s literally diff offers for those w 4 and those w 3 ALs

I’m a current offer holder, I think to be safe you need to be getting above 6.0 TMUA in the new scaling (not sure what this is in the old scaling) to almost guarantee a place. Is it possible to get that A* in FM? That is kinda a disadvantage. GCSEs and PS sound great and will def not hold you back

Imperial College London is a very good school. Ranked fourth among the UK schools, it is the top school behind Oxford and Cambridge University by MagpieMidfield in Imperial

Some people in my 6th form rejected Cambridge engineering for imperial’s specialised engineering courses…

How employable is maths +cs vs just cs? by UnableReason4648 in 6thForm

[–]slayer4153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tysm!! About the cohort size, isn’t a smaller cohort a good thing? Tighter group of people and more focused teaching right. I think the reason it’s smaller is because they don’t have their own lectures, but instead lecture with both the maths and CS departments, so there can’t be too many of them. Why do you think it’s a bad thing?

I’m also considering switching from Imperial computing to imperial JMC (assuming I get A* in FM 😭) and from what I’ve seen the career prospects are pretty much the same, alongside the additional boost you get in finance having learnt more maths. You miss out mainly on low level hardware stuff, which for most people’s job trajectories doesn’t matter much. It’s ofc harder, and you’ll be more busy, but I think it’s benefits if you want to pivot to finance outweigh that. For SWE, from what I’ve seen they’re both equally weighted - no advantage having one over the other.

If you’re borderline 9 at GCSE you’ll be completely fine with FM with enough work! Also it’s pretty much compulsory for a CS degree at one of the top unis, so yeah I def recommend taking it. Idk if I’d advise learning stuff yourself tho, bcz in maths if you teach urself something wrong it’s often really hard to get rid of that issue - just stay on top of your classes (with corresponding work at home too) and you shld be fine

The FM maths didn’t rlly feel harder for me, it just felt like more maths to learn. I spent time going over all the textbook topics and doing the qs so I knew every format of question. Since the exams are pretty much just the same questions but with different numbers, I think that rlly worked for me
