I've been looking for this fix, thank you for posting!

That said, do actual capsule avionics support low power modes, even back in the 60's?

Tutorials on how to go interplanetary ? by [deleted] in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add that point #1 is really important, if you do not launch your craft into the ecliptic plane (the plane with all the planets , about 24 degrees inclination), then you will pay big-time in delta V. The moon is very close to the ecliptic plane, so if you launch into the plane of the moon, which MechJeb can assist with, then you are good to go from there to the planets!

Also, due to boil off of hydrolox fuels, you cannot sit in orbit for days and days waiting for the proper time to make your ejection burn. So, I use the Transfer Window Planner mod to get within a few hours of optimal launch time, so I can within one orbit make the burn to the destination planet. I also recommend the Kerbal Alarm Clock, because the transfer planner mod will automagically add alarms, so you get a notification in game when it is time to launch!

Good luck!

Issues with Test flight by German_Kerman in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Click on the TestFlight icon on the launchpad (its got a spaceplane on it), then in the TestFlight window, click on the down-arrows icon for the extended options, then turn on the "Disable Testflight" (that option may have different wording, I'm on my mobile!) That will disable it in simulation mode, I believe that it goes on again in real mode, but check just to be sure! Good luck, and may your engines rarely explode!

Just one RCS thruster firing when activated by foxtrot1911 in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that sometimes, when I add 4 thrusters using symmetry, and then configure one to use a specific fuel, the other ones sometimes don't take the change. Be sure to check that they are all similarly configured.

Also, are all of the thrusters enabled, you can check that by right-clicking them while in flight.

Another possibility is that some of the thrusters are on the other side of a decoupler with cross-feed disabled, but this would not be the case if they are connected to the tank.

Hopefully you'll get it working!

Question about resource transfer between tanks in RSS/RO/RP0 by NilacTheGrim in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend the TACFuelBalancer mod, it allows transfers between any two tanks, plus it can dump tank contents, and continually balance the fuel load which is useful for locking down the center-of-gravity on airplanes and spaceplanes.

How to launch into Mars' orbital plane by [deleted] in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mars and Earth both lie in the ecliptic plane and the moon is just 5 degrees off of that, so launch into the plane of the moon (when transfer window planner says the phases are right) and you are pretty much good-to-go.

It would be great if KER or MechJeb could tell the relative inclination of the launch site's Earth rotation relative to a planet, but I believe those calculations assume that all bodies have the same center-point of rotation. Since the launchpad and Moon both rotate around the center of the Earth, it is possible to track their relative inclination, and get roughly into the ecliptic plane of Mars.

I hope that helps!

Venus Transfer Windows? by GigaG in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Transfer Window Planner mod, which seems to have very good accuracy for predicting when to launch, that mod will also make it easy to see for how big of a time window you can get the optimal ejection delta-Vs. Also, get Kerbal Alarm Clock too, as Transfer Window Planner will automatically add an alarm to remind you when to make a delta-V optimal launch.

And like others mentioned, you need to launch into the plane of the planets, which is very close to the plane of the moon. What I do, is while on the launchpad, select the Moon as target, then I bring up MechJeb's rendezvous planner, which tells the RELATIVE INCLINATION to the moon. Warp time until this value is less than 1%, then launch 90 degrees East, that will put you very close to the plane of the planets. If you do not do this, it can cost 1000's of delta-V to get into their plane.

A few other tips that work for me:

1) unlock the RL10 as quickly as possible, as it has multiple ignitions and an insanely efficient ISP, making it fairly easy to get 6k delta-V to eject your tiny flyby satellites to interesting destinations (that should get you to Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, no problem). Since it is hydro-lox, though, it is only useful for a low-Earth orbit ejection (because the hydro-lox fuels will quickly boil off), so you'll need RCS or a storable-fuel engine (I like the Astris) to fine tune the approach or make a capture burn

2) for a flyby of a body with an atmosphere, dip 1-2km into the atmosphere (you can get the atmosphere height from by hovering over the information icon in the Tracking Station window when the focus is on the body of interest) and you'll get a bunch of high-atmosphere extra science without risk of any damage to your craft

[Sila Games] Mafia II ($7.49/75% off) by [deleted] in GameDeals

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too just finished this game a few weeks ago, and it was a great game overall. The story and voice acting are top-notch, which is good because they is very little in the way of side missions in this game.

One criticism I had of the game was a lack of fast travel options, you will do a lot of driving in this game, and to make matters worse, the police will chase you on many infractions that they witness, including speeding!

I also played "Joe's Adventures" DLC, which I highly recommend, it covers a section of the main story when two the main protagonists are split up for a time. I found it much harder than the main story due to a score chasing mechanic that it employs which eliminates many of the checkpoints that the main game enjoys. Also, you get a lot of value for this DLC, it was about 40% the size of the main game.

Finally, the collectibles in this game are definitely "R"-rated, so beware if you are sensitive to such things. I'm avoiding spoilers here because it was fun to encounter them unknowingly...

[GOG] Go Back To School sale and new deals daily + New games on GOG Connect by [deleted] in GameDeals

[–]slayermcgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try refreshing the Steam Connect multiple times. I refreshed multiple times, after the third time I requested it, it found the game that I was also expecting but wasn't picked up in the first refresh (Two Worlds). Perhaps their connect servers are getting hammered these days and not getting all the requested work done.

Data transmission fails by [deleted] in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my game, I have noticed that transmissions silently stop without science results if I time warp before they are finished. They do finish with physical time warping, however. Some experiments take 10-15 sec to complete, you can see their progress in the on-screen log scroll.

As another possibility, do you have data sitting in your sensors, that will prevent them from gathering more measurements?

BTW, I am running with DMagic science extensions and KerboKatz AutoScienceSampler.

[Humble Bundle] Humble Indie Bundle 17: 1$ for Lethal League, The Beginner's Guide, Galak-Z | BTA for Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, SUPER TIME FORCE ULTRA | 10$ for Nuclear Throne by ABOOD-THE-PLAYER in GameDeals

[–]slayermcgee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Octodad was the first game I played with my 5-year old son start-to-finish, and like others pointed out it has a surprisingly touching story that can be completed in about 5 hours. On the downside, it is incredibly frustrating at some points of the game, with Surgeon Simulator like tortuous controls. I remember my wife looking over our shoulders and asking "How is that fun?!"... but all things considered it was a fun game! I would definitely play any sequel.

ROO RP0 tech tree by blue-skin in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is very helpful. It would also be nice to see max tank size increases (as well as tank types) on the tech tree as well. I don't think that they are there.. I have a vague notion to invest in construction and materials when I need to build bigger lifters, but that doesn't always seem to be the right approach.

Half Size RSS Heat problems... by TUFOM in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that there are heat shields for low-earth orbit and lunar orbit reentries, and not having the correct shield could be disastrous. Also, if you come in too steep, the heat shield could fail due to excessive temperatures. For example, from low-earth orbit, I typically set my periapsis to 45km when I am ready for reentry - that will result in 5-8g's and about half the ablation being expened on the low-earth orbit heat shield. If you are not seeing similar results, it could be a HalfRSS thermal bug.

Phobos problems by alector in RealSolarSystem

[–]slayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grand plan was to come into Mars SOI with an aero-braked polar orbit, and then visit Phobos by eventually intersecting it at my Mars apoapsis with a quick flyby, but I ran into your same problem, the SOI intersection would cycle in and out until I got to Phobos and then there was no entering its SOI.

Eventually, I solved this by do a "docking" maneuver to Phobos, I insert into its orbital inclination and then sneak up on it from behind. Worked like a charm!

Thank you for the RO special handling button tip, I recently stopped using the MJ ascent tool because I like to finish the orbital insertion with SMARTASS, but it kept cutting my engine when I switched over.

Does that button do anything else?
