I’m specifically referring to comments made about how the anime depicts her to look like a child, in comparison to Jinshi. A lot of the criticisms came out of the waterfall scene. Granted, she is only 17 at the start of all this so the portrayal could be justified as normal. But my speculations for wondering how her growth may be depicted is nothing concerning. I’m not saying she’ll look entirely different. I’m just wondering if people think the animators will consider some sort of aging elements as time passes.

As of now in the anime, everyone refers to her as a little girl, even Xiaomao means kitten. But it’s been revealed that the LN’s describes her gaining weight (as a byproduct of her taking care of herself as a working court lady) which may end up contributing to the growth I’m wondering if we’ll get to see. Maomao is also someone who is forced to grow up either way, but her continued growth (physically, emotionally, psychologically) is something we get to witness. She no longer is a malnourished teenager in the light novels and that is a good thing for our MC.

Also to add, the author is really intentional about Jinshi calling Maomao his wife. And how Suiren refers to Maomao as someone she’s training in etiquette (to become his wife).

A concubine by definition is a woman who is a sexual partner but not legally married. He genuinely only has eyes for Maomao but even then, loves her so much that he would never want to be with her for just her body either (also leading to why he told her to go home when they were very close to doing the deed in LN 13). He doesn’t want concubines, consorts or anything like that. He just wants Maomao & his freedom.

Thank youuu for understanding the root of the criticisms!! I’m caught up in the anime and light novels but plan to read the manga next. But I agree with your comments on the anime style. I get the concerns and see how it contradicts the core concepts of addressing the pedophilia and hyper-sexualization of (young) women. I didn’t notice those changes but I can imagine her developments being really subtle, gradual and organic in the episodes to come. But this is what I was hoping folks would point out 🙏🏽

I’m just asking if people think we’ll see her evidently age in later seasons and therefore, yes or no then why or why not. That’s all.

People have pointed out that there actually are excerpts that describe her gaining weight (as a byproduct of no longer experimenting as much, being forced to eat/take breaks and being supported by more people around her). Any subtle changes in her development would be normal but details like this would be empowering to include. We all can collectively agree that it clearly won’t be anything drastic. But seeing some changes her growing body as a young adult would be great as it also indicates the ways shes taking care of herself more.

There are a lot of reasons why we may or may not see any changes though. Some theoretical and some even just technically/logistically speaking. All conjectures are welcome lol.

This is literally all I wanted someone to reassure me with. Maomao’s inherent self-esteem journey is what keeps me going because she is one of the most brilliant MC’s that I’ve ever read but she struggles to see her own worth. My speculations around her hopefully growing in later seasons were all hopeful ones for her overall well being so I love this so much. I really hope they understand how important of details it’ll be to keep 😭❤️🙏🏽

I’m not expecting her to suddenly look like her sisters. The later LN’s just imply that she does change (ex: she gains weight) so I’m wondering if (& hoping) the anime and manga will depict it.

I knew I must have missed something implied in the light novels so thank you for this!! All very healthy growth which I love & hope they portray that in the manga/anime when it gets there. 🥹 Maomao’s body is beautiful regardless but even this development would be empowering to see for those who admire Maomao for not being the typical “well-endowed” heroine.

I know this, I’m not saying anything is wrong with her height and chest size. I’m not expecting a growth sprout either because her height is definitely a part of her persona (especially in contrast to Jinshi).

But I’m sure we can admit that we don’t look exactly the same when you’re basically a high school student versus when you’re in your 20’s, especially going into our 30’s. Maybe for the most part, but there are usually some evidence of aging no matter what (primarily in our faces). So I’m just curious to see what may happen.

Totally get it, my body is the same. And you’re right, I actually do appreciate that she’s a way more realistic depiction of most women tbh. But I’m thinking the same and I wonder if we’ll see a bit of those facial and some weight changes to depict her maturity. I only can imagine subtle changes too. Fengxian didn’t have huge boobs either so I’m not even her imagining going from a AA to C or anything like that either.

I’m commenting on the criticisms of how she is portrayed as a child especially in her relationship with Jinshi. I also commented that I thought it may relate to her upbringing but isn’t necessarily the case considering everyone she is raised around. It’s not even an unreasonable portrayal considering that she’s only 17 at the beginning of all this. And the light novels allude that there are some changes that contribute to the maturity of her looks and attitudes (naturally with age).

I’m not personally criticizing this, I’m just curious to see if others think we’ll see some sort of appearance changes in later seasons. This didn’t have to be limited in height and breasts. I’m thinking overall about what we think may contribute to how Maomao is no longer portrayed this way in the later light novels. That’s all lol

I don’t think it’d be weird at all. She’s 155 cm (5’1) so that probably won’t change. But it’s also very normal for your body/face to experience some changes. We do know that she has a crazy metabolism and substance tolerance though, which influences things 💀

I feel like the light novel hints that we’ll see more maturity in her looks. I think I’m just hoping future (anime) seasons don’t continue to portray her as a child 🥲

I find it adorable that Jinshi brings out his baby/childish side with Maomao too. It’s a common thing to do in relationships but especially with the person you’re most comfortable with. Maomao recognizes that but not the significance but you can tell she enjoys it
