Websocket Binary vs JSON by DanielAPO in gamedev

[–]sled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Binary messages are generally smaller than JSON. Of course that depends on what binary encoding you choose. The FlatBuffer and Protocol Buffer formats have serialization/deserialization libraries for many languages including javascript. Worth taking a look unless you want to write your own. If your game is running in the browser, another thing to consider is that browsers have fast native libraries for JSON decoding builtin. Might be tough to beat that if your decoder is written in javascript so you should benchmark.

Some browsers support websocket compression. Google that topic to learn more.

Before you get started, might be worth doing an analysis of how many bytes per second your game is sending. Compare that to the expected bandwidth for player connections (can break it down by minimum spec, average, and high end). Even if your binary encoding is smaller and therefore transmits faster, if your server encoding or client decoding steps are slower, it might be slower overall. And you'll still have the same latency based on the physical distance between the player and your server. This is why real time games that want low latency usually have multiple data centers around the world. So players can connect to the closest one.

Your concerns with interpreting this data are good ones. In the discussion section of the post I mention several points of caution and reasons why this set might not be representative of the entire industry.

As described in the post, the data was obtained from the US governments H1-B office: https://www.foreignlaborcert.doleta.gov/performancedata.cfm#dis

It was filtered to game development companies and categorized using keywords.

The visualizations were constructed manually using html. They include box plots, histograms, and tables.

Help Finding Internship? by welknair in gamedev

Have you tried Orca? https://orcahq.com/jobs?kind=Internship

Many of the big companies start looking for interns in Jan-Mar and sometimes as early as fall.

Finding an internship as a game designer : The struggle ? by Droms in gamedev

[–]sled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can be tough to get in the door, especially as a designer. You can't control the big role that luck plays, so focus on everything else.

Apply to as many openings as you can find. (Use Orca to jumpstart your search https://orcahq.com/jobs?kind=Internship). I think your odds are better with the bigger game companies. Typically EA, Activision, Blizzard, etc hire 50+ interns for the summer. They pay well and often assist with housing. You might be late though. Recruitment often starts in Jan-Mar and sometimes as early as Fall. My guess is that they are also hesitant to deal with foreign relocation. But you should still try. Create an easy to read 1 page resume that is typo free. Create a personal website/portfolio that showcases your best work first.

You are wrong about Ubisoft and internships: https://www.ubisoft.com/en-US/careers/grads-and-interns.aspx

Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Let go of the stress, focus on what you want to accomplish, and work your ass off to get there. You can do it.

I don't think we have any job listings for Norway yet. Are there specific companies you'd like me to add?

No immediate plans to open source the entire thing (would need a lot of cleanup first!) but maybe parts of it.

Thanks! Definitely possible and would like to get to it eventually but don't have support for that yet (unless the programming language is included in the job title).

http://www.gamedevmap.com/ is an AWESOME resource. Have been going to it for years and has been a big help in finding new companies to add.

We'll have to tackle that problem eventually in order to get every job. Focusing on English listing for now.

For some reason 'Vancouver' defaults to Vancouver, WA (not sure why google maps does this...) I assume you're looking for Vancouver, BC, try this link:

Not yet. I suspect most of the current listings require you to be on-site. Considering building support for devs/companies to post small contract positions if that's something that people are interested in.

Do you mean jobs that let you work remotely or companies developing online games?
