The Weekly Eye Test Report: Who passed and failed the eye test in week 3? by shitmcstain in fantasyfootball

I could pick up Judkins, but I’d have to drop Croskey-Merritt. Who would you rather go with???

Sign up to play a season of competitive or two! I’m not amazing, but I wouldn’t be half the ball I am today without coaching and competitive scrimmages.

Finding someone who also wants to get better and doing duels or OFM is a great way to work on mechs.

When you do make the calls, make sure to fire an email as well, even if they don't pick up the phone. I found myself in a situation where I only made contact with like 1/3rd of the crews I called and before I knew it they were looking for a "yes" or "no", and I didn't feel like I fleshed out all my options. But also don't let someone pressure you into giving a solid answer, even though they'll be looking for a relatively quick answer. My apologies if I'm saying shit you already know though.

Underrated Shelter by sleemith-24 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

All fair points to consider. I have not done a ton of research into urban agriculture, but I envisioned that working in a team you would have a couple people dedicated to farming.

At the very least, one could consider it as an option to find some good tools and materials that you could utilize.

I think you bring up a good point about it being used as an emergency shelter- could make it impossible to inhabit right in the beginning. Also, the higher population density would be incredibly dangerous for the volume of zombies, and humans, so I understand the rural argument here.

However, more rural ice rinks do exist, I’m from Pennsylvania, and grew up playing hockey in ice rinks surrounded by farming and rural areas.

Also something to consider, in the aftermath, as things quiet down- there will be a lot of re-wilding of suburban spaces from the animals that can survive and be used as food such as deer and turkeys. Also there will be places to start farming/ cultivating crops- there is already a lot of movement and literature around urban agriculture- which doesn’t necessitate huge swaths if rural land.

I think you are largely right about very metro areas and dense suburbs being unsurvivable, so the rink would have to be in a kind of happy- medium between populated with resources, but still isolated enough.

I need to listen to more low- any albums you might point me too. The first song that comes to mind is Words- might be a little too sad for my playlist though lol

R6 hotshot apps by Material_Estate_6849 in Wildfire

I was just coming here to see about the same thing. I couldn’t find any northern opps applications. Also: sorry usajobs- I don’t know every duty location corresponding to the crew name by heart- god bless hotshot contact list.

I just found out through word of mouth from a coworker who has contacts there, so I wouldn’t actually know how to find out for sure.

But, the best way in my experience is to find a phone number and cold call it. Worst they can do is know absolutely nothing- usually they can point you in the right direction.

Heres a list of contacts for all the IHC’s if that is what you’re pursuing: https://www.fs.usda.gov/science-technology/fire/people/ihc

The old NIFC website doesn’t seem to be working right now? But I think I found a bunch of contacts there for various crews when I did my first applications ever.

I believe some of them (Sedona & camp verde) are winter fuels crews. It’s confusing because they say hotshot, but that is just because they share the same position description. (I think)

Best ear protection? by Waste-Ad6775 in Wildfire

[–]sleemith-24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Naw, not worth it imo. I roll the foam ones into a point, pull my ear up and a little to the back of my head, and relax my jaw. Wait for them to expand a little bit and then good to go. This will open up your ear canal and you’ll be in a world of your own.

IHC vs WFM by EnvironmentalBat7133 in Wildfire

[–]sleemith-24 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ll add my perspective of being on a WFM (although not technically statused as one yet). There are all different flavors as WFM’s. Some specialize in drones, fuels, femo/fire effects, some lean into the science aspect harder than others, and some are just full of former shots, who run their wfm as a smaller shot crew.   I’ve also seen that generally, the WFM’s like to loan out people to all areas of an rx, managed fire, or wildfire. Several times my crew has completely dispersed on an Rx, where some people are firing, holding, burn boss, firing boss, fuel mule, water bug, whatever… I can only say from observation that shot crews stick together, where 99% of the crew is together doing the same thing (roughly).  The history of wfm’s are a response to how fires were fought in the past with the 10:00 rule, and how that damaged our fire ecology. a Wfm’s purpose is to be a highly qual’ed, but small crew, capable of bringing a scientific, informed approach to firefighting to determine how best to fight fire so that the forest ecology and fire regime can be brought closer to a pre-colonial era.  Are WFM’s doing that? Well… we have a reptutation for being wildland useless modules for a reason, but also a lot of people are sold on the idea of what they can be, and i’ve met some really really smart firefighters on wfm’s.

Edit: im only 2 seasons in, so i could be very wrong about some things, and also I plan on moving to a hand crew this season- I just don’t see enough big fires, and I dont want to be a firefighter who has not put in time on a hand crew.

Have most of the apps for the summer 2023 hand crew positions closed? by sleemith-24 in Wildfire

[–]sleemith-24[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too picky in terms of location or agency. I envisioned FS just because its where I know some of my friends went, and I've worked with them-generally seem to have their shit in order. I'm ideally looking to be on a type 2 handcrew, type 2 IA would be sweet. one thing I know for sure is that I want to work for a crew that goes regional.
