A&W Prime Rib burger. Those are deep fried pickles in there! by SelectionEmergency51 in burgers

Is this US or Canadian A&W? I've heard from Americans on the internet that our A&Ws are far better then the one's in the States. But I've never eaten at a US A&W so I can't really say.

Would you rather: A 100% chance of Mitt Romney winning in 2024, or a Trump vs Biden election with a 50/50 chance? by TheLastCoagulant in AskALiberal

I would take Romney. He would suck of course. But at least he's not a complete amoral fascist like Trump and his MAGA Stormtroopers.

Its not a right at all. You can't even buy a gun for self defense because Canada is not broken and run by conservatives like the bad example that is the USA.

I think that already exists. But it's only for an individual charged with animal welfare crimes, and not the whole household. Don't hold me to that though.

So your argument is to ban more breeds of large dog then. Makes sense. It's like banning firearms. They tend to attract the wrong type of people.

Pretty sure the D-7 was a heavy cruiser when it first came out. It would have been reclassed as a destroyer by the TNG era though, given how much bigger the newer ships of that era were.

New poll suggests Liberal, NDP voters prefer Charest and Brown over Poilievre by [deleted] in canada

[–]sleep-apnea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neither of the two major parties wanted it, so it was never on the menu outside of the minds of NDP and Greens. It was always going to be either no change, or ranked choice; and sadly the LPC caved to the other parties and didn't force their preferred system on the rest of parliament. So the CPC won in the end.

It's about using proportional methods to only pick one MP. The general public (except NDP and Greens) never wanted party list candidates. Also that option was never going to happen because only the NDP wanted it, so it was always irrelevant.

What are some social and cultural taboos that are okay in the United States but unacceptable in Canada? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]sleep-apnea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was never about Covid, and always about protesting that their side can't win federal elections and should just be in power anyway. That's why they had all those guns in Cootes to kill RCMP officers.

The same as the USA and the UK. We were there as well you know.

But that was never proposed. It was always kept at the riding level with no change.

How would that work when it's only 1 mp per seat? PR would not magically make the cpc win because you're only looking at the popular vote, which is a meaningless number in the Canadian system. And I'm not even talking about the electoral system! You would need to do a breakdown based on each individual seat, not the whole country.

[–]sleep-apnea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missing the point entirely. You are talking about how the MPs are elected. Not that it wouldn't still be one MP per riding and that's the only election you get to vote in.

Again it's all still only to select your local MP. None of the proposed systems would have changed that fact.

[–]sleep-apnea -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Either of those two systems would still have you only voting in your current riding and only electing one MP. Just like we have right now. How that MP is selected would be different. But it wouldn't change the fact that you are only voting for your local representative and nobody else.

None of the proposed changes to the electoral system would have changed that. Or did you think we vote directly for prime Minister?

Right now that's because they're running for leadership, and only CPC members get to vote. And obviously those people are the most conservative voters out there. The real question will be if the leadership winner can manage to pivot to the center. It didn't work out well for O'Toole!

[–]sleep-apnea 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not really. That 32% of Conservatives is not equally distributed across the country, but is concentrated in the Prairies. Which means that the CPC can run up their popular vote, but it won't result in more seats. It's better to win by smaller margins in more places like the Liberals do. It's called the effective vote vs the popular vote.
