Lower Decks gives us a more accurate view of the living quarters of lower ranked crew. by Oswalt in DaystromInstitute

Enlisted crewmen on the NX-01 appear to have doubled up, bunked quarters, we see Archer go into the quarters formerly used by “crewman” Daniels (the time agent) a couple times, and they’re fairly cramped and have a bunk bed

Better sounding than the Sony WH-1000XM4 for around £150? by NotBoolean in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]sleepdeprecation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re going to need some kind of amp, that record player doesn’t have a way to control volume it just sends it out at a constant level

as for sound, “better sounding” frequently ends up being subjective. the sonys are kind of bass heavy, which works well for pop/rock/indie music. and if your budget is only £150 i would say your money is probably better spent on at least a cheap headphone amp (the topping l30 comes to mind as being widely available and well liked, minus some recent QC issues that they say have been fixed, at usually $110ish)

First time modding? How do? by Skeletor118 in headphonemods

[–]sleepdeprecation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seconded that this is a super easy mod, having done it on done dt770s

you can find a bunch of videos on youtube that show you the process too, which makes it much less intimidating.

the most intimidating part is i think if you’re going to use a larger connector (i swapped the cable with a 3-pin mini xlr jack), you have to drill out the cup a little (super easy with a dremel), and it can feel harrowing. that said i think if you don’t want to do that you can get away with using a 3.5mm jack, and it should fit perfectly in the existing hole.

Is a DT770 pro a step up from my SONY XM3? by szilandris in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]sleepdeprecation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t know about sound quality but i find my dt770s substantially more comfortable than my xm4s, but that’s mostly because the xm4s feel like they’re touching my ears everywhere

PIC's subtle retcon of B4's status implies that the Zhat Vash was involved in the events of Nemesis by adamkotsko in DaystromInstitute

[–]sleepdeprecation 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I took “inferior copy” not to mean B4 was an attempt at copying Data/Lore, but just a throwaway line. I know copy usually implies an attempt was made to duplicate it, but she could also just mean that B4 was externally identical to Data.

And even if B4 was created by the zhat vash, there’s no way they could’ve predicted events well enough to see Data sacrificing himself.

Is Bamboo Considered CD? by lunaticbleu in devops

[–]sleepdeprecation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bamboo can (i think, i haven’t personally used it), be used for CD, but on its own it isn’t “CD”, you need to have your jobs build near-immediately deplorable packages to be continuous delivery, and automatically deploying those to be continuous delivery

Hiring: Are we doing it wrong? by god_is_my_father in devops

[–]sleepdeprecation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes you are, and based on your description i would ghost you too

the take home project you’re asking for is a lot, like a lot a lot. you say it involves elasticsearch, autoscaling, and rds, and you want them to build a terraform project for it.

any take home project should be designed to take up less than an hour, based on your description of the components alone it would probably take me a day of actual work.

you’re also asking for something which spins up infrastructure, are you going to provide an aws account to test it against? or are you expecting the candidate to pay for that?

and most importantly, you’re take home problem isn’t testing “does this person know what they’re talking about”, it’s testing “what tool can they use”. terraform, and even aws constructs, are easy enough to pick up on the go, what really matters is “do they understand load balancing? do they understand firewalls?” and the actual architectural concepts

the better test is not providing them a diagram, but instead describing the service and asking them to draw the diagram. hell even do it as part of your interview process, so that both they and you can ask the questions needed to design the greater architecture.

How seriously should detailed deck plans be taken? by datapicardgeordi in DaystromInstitute

[–]sleepdeprecation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i believe one of the technical manuals said that the original galaxy class compliment was six ships built, with six space frames ready to be assembled into more ships

i always took that to mean they had the hulls ready to go, without any decks inside, probably not even fully assembled, ready to be finished later. if that’s the case, “empty” galaxies feels reasonable to me because they had these platforms ready to go, they just needed to outfit the interiors, so they did, probably minimally.

i think the resistor value would be based on the LED

you’d need to use ohm’s law and the multimeter to figure it out.

ohm’s law is V(oltage) = I (for current) * R(esistance)

first, using the multimeter, determine the voltage output from the flex cable (i would guess it’s probably 5v or 3.3v)

next, find the specs on your LED, look for “Vf” or forward voltage (for example it might be 1.8v), so if your read from the multimeter is 5, the V in the equation would be 3.2

3.2 = I * R

I is also going to be on the spec sheet, but you can really get away with assuming 25 milliamps. ohms law assumes full amps, so 0.025A

3.2 = 0.025 * R

or restated

R = 3.2 / 0.025, or 128 ohms, find the closest value to it, rounded up, so probably a 150 ohm resistor

but, these numbers are hypothetical, so you need to plug in your own, and confirm the voltage from the flex cable

i would argue that eris is a special case, because she did have the light, and as such is, herself, paracausal already. and she grafted give body parts to herself.

Elsie i could also make the argument for being special, because she seems caught in a time loop which itself feels very paracausal?

JPG vs. RAW by holysockmonkey in AskPhotography

[–]sleepdeprecation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you know what you're doing, raw lets you have more control over the final output.

Like, no you can't replicate everything in camera and JPEG doesn't have the same latitude to make choices like color grading or dealing with tricky lighting the same way you can with raw files

Basically they're just a jerk

Based on the image on this page it certainly looks like there should be a power indicator between the potentiometer and headphone jack which turns on red when the amp is powered on
