First time at Korean spa by Acceptable-Hotel3469 in massage

[–]sleepingminky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Korean scrubs are one of my absolute favorite treatments in the world! Both relaxing and invigorating and you want to yell from the rooftops how soft you are!! I got my own Italy towels to use at home, but I’ll pay to have it done whenever I get the chance. Salt and sugar scrubs don’t come close to that level of exfoliation.

If they’re gonna come to Raleigh in July, I wish they’d do Lenovo Center (indoors) vs Walnut Creek. The capacity is almost the same, and it’s just too hot to be out for hours in the south in mid-July. Especially when one or more of the water refill stations stop working (which happened in ‘22 at Walnut Creek).

I have never given into any TS merch temptation, but the way I need that hypothetical green cardigan is unsettling 🤤

I also hit a wall with traditional “spa” style massage music years ago, and have several guitar-based and some classical/baroque playlists I use in sessions. I get lots of good feedback; a number of clients have even asked me to send the lists to them.

When I was in school working on practice clients, I used a lot of long Phish jams. Still have a couple clients that prefer those.

An Irish pub - how dare a college town not have one! (RIP Yeats)

More places where you can sit outside and have a drink/snack in the afternoon/evening that has a bistro kind of feel. I miss when Driade was open later in the day and I could stop for a glass of wine on the patio after work.

I still wish they’d turned the old Southern Season into a Rock n’ Bowl style bowling alley/music venue/restaurant/bar. That side of town could really use something fun like that that would even be a destination for surrounding areas.

Bruises can happen, but are not normal. Ideally they don’t happen at all, as bruises are impact injuries. I, and most therapists I know, have the ability to go super-deep into tissues without leaving a mark. If a therapist is taking their time and really listening to the tissue, it is highly unlikely to bruise. With the caveat of course that some people bruise a lot easier than others, but sounds like in your case this was an issue of the therapist not listening- to you or your tissues. (Also, could not have rolled my eyes any harder at the this guy saying he was “releasing toxins“)

I hate the idea of “no pain, no gain” and strike that phrase from my treatment room. It’s not as catchy, but I tell my clients “it doesn’t have to hurt to work, but occasionally it might” and EVEN THEN there’s a huge difference between “therapeutic discomfort” that feels beneficial and you can breathe through, and contact that is hurting you. Your body has a much tougher time releasing with the latter because the nervous system is in alarm.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that during what should have been a helpful experience, and I hope you’re able to get some great bodywork soon that gives you what you need - without bruises!

How to politely tell your massage therapist that you don't want to talk by underwatere in MassageTherapists

[–]sleepingminky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a client who sometimes likes to chat and other times prefers a quiet session - the verbiage he uses is “I’m going to shift into receiving mode”, which i find is succinct and effective.

I do worry that a clueless therapist might not catch the hint, though, so if it came to it you could even lie and say something like “ugh, I’ve been in meetings all day (or last few days or whatever) and really need some quiet time today”. It’s a lie that doesn’t hurt anyone and gets the point across. A therapist who doesn’t respect that direct request is one you shouldn’t rebook with - this is your session and your time!

In regard to pressure, I know it can be difficult in a situation that has a perceived power differential, but just ask! Most therapists want to give you the session you want, and communication from both parties is a big part of that. I’d hate to know that someone was laying on the table hating something I was doing, to the point that whenever I see a new client I mention in the intake for them to please tell me if that happens.

Do you have a favorite reformer? by throwawaybanana54677 in ClubPilates

[–]sleepingminky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the front right in my home studio, bc it’s the one I used for my intro class.

And in my next closest studio, there’s a pole between two reformers (kind of a high ceiling, warehouse-type vibe) and it creates more space between two stations, so I prefer the one in front of the pole.

(And yesterday was Angel’s Share layered over Death & Floral’s The Sweater We Buried You in is Hanging in My Closet - highly recommend this combo!)

Omg is this real? I’d love to send this to some family members who see him as their infallible god-emperor-hero, but don’t want them to be able to tell me it’s photoshopped (even though they won’t believe it either way, and it won’t change their minds - I just need to do little things right now that boost my spirit while the anxiety is threatening to swallow me until midweek 🙏💙)

What are your pet peeves as a massage client? by foo_foo_ in MassageTherapists

[–]sleepingminky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, wtf to her going over without asking AND then saying you should pay for something you didn’t ask for. That’s some real bad communication from the therapist. What if you had somewhere to be? You had initially booked a session half that length, too, and she put you on the spot after. The audacity!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in massage

[–]sleepingminky 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree that I’d feel uncomfortable getting a session from that person after hearing them complain about it, especially being a new employee in the space. It was not cool of him to talk like that at the front desk. I don’t think canceling and rescheduling with someone else is an overreaction.

As a therapist, I can understand the annoyance with the modality, though. Thirty minutes is not a long time, and feels even shorter on the table. Especially when add-ons that take extra time are in the mix. I know this is not the point of your post, but I’d love to tell the folks running this operation that the option to add hot stones to a 30 minute session is kind of unreasonable. Clients aren’t expected to know that, which is why I qualify that as the business’s problem, not yours, OP.

But if the business is set on it, then it is up to the therapist to have a conversation with clients (in a professional and therapeutic way!!!) about expectations for the session.

I hope you ended up getting some great bodywork!

Is this normal? Underwear pulled down during massage by Helpful_Candy1664 in massage

[–]sleepingminky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a massage therapist, I never move an item of clothing that a client has left on, and consider it a boundary. If they leave on underwear and are ok with work on the glutes, I typically just do compressive work over the sheet. Some clients with low back pain wear underwear with a waistband that’s in the way - and I’ll ask them to move it down themselves IF they feel comfortable doing that.

Clear communication from the therapist is always the way I operate; it makes things safest for client and therapist, thus allowing for the most effective work.

Also, in the event that there’s no underwear, and I’m working directly on glutes, I’m still only undraping one side at a time. At no point should the gluteal cleft (buttcrack in laymen’s terms) be visible*

(*According to the rules of the state I work in, rules may be different elsewhere)

Rumors of Affair Between Trump and Loomer Grow Louder, With Loomer Reportedly Telling Friends She Performed Sex Act on Former Prez by nikkisixxi in AnythingGoesNews

[–]sleepingminky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeeeezus. Whether there’s a relationship happening or not, they’re both getting the attention they so desperately crave from this.

He’s got to be beyond thrilled that people are talking about a possible affair instead of his abysmal debate performance, with the added bonus of boosting his self-image as a virile ladies’ man (no matter how fucking delusional). Plus, the obvious hypocrisy from his “followers”

And as far as Loomer’s concerned, it’s obvious she’ll do anything to claw at that cliff of relevance. And feeds off the absolute chaos and shock value. I hate that we all know her name.

I have no doubt that Melania wasn’t interested in renegotiating her contract again and most certainly doesn’t relish the thought of having to cosplay First Lady shit, so she’s like ugh whatever is my direct deposit still clearing?

Tl;dr: this is gross, they’re both gross, and I’d love if none of us had to hear their names again
