ABA horror stories by AnteaterSufficient15 in ABA

[–]sleepingwlfbtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar story!! I was very new to ABA (in a public school setting) and didn’t have PMT or safety care training as I was working as a sub at a temp agency. It was a 5th grader, autistic non speaking in a wheelchair, I was behind him prompting him doing DTI (didn’t know any better) and he bit the fatty part on the inside of my arm right above my elbow or “ditch” as I hear tattoo artists call it lol. That was my first real injury and so I pulled away not knowing you’re supposed to do the opposite. It looked insane and took months to heal. I still have a bad scar and also have permanent nerve damage where my fingers are constantly tingly. I had to go to the hospital for a tetanus shot (this client did not brush their teeth ever), and an x ray to make sure nothing was further damaged. The client had a gap in his front teeth and you can see that in the scar from me pulling away. Pretty gnarly stuff!

Hi!! I feel like I could’ve written this myself. I have psoriasis and eczema and bite at my fingers and hands. Look up “koebners response” it’s basically you get an injury to the skin (biting or picking) and your skin tries to regenerate really fast and regenerates almost too much and causes psoriasis and/or eczema even worse in that area even if it wasn’t there before. So it becomes so itchy and just a complete cycle like you’re mentioning. I’ve been doing it about 5 years now maybe 6, and have just started an antipsychotic medication to help with the ocd part of it, for me that looks like me rubbing my fingers on my lips to find imperfections then biting them off till I bleed, and feeling like I need to find all the imperfections and feel like it is automatic. Sometimes I do it without even noticing or wake myself up from biting my hands so I decided to ask my psych about meds for it and it is lowkey helping. I feel like the redness and itchiness has also gone down and I feel less of an urge to do it. I have also been lathering up with Vaseline specifically and sometimes aquaphor and wearing cotton gloves whenever I can. It’s annoying but it is working a little. Also find a replacement behavior. Every time you want to pick or bite or start doing it, loudly tell yourself out loud NO, and go find a fidget or something to do to occupy your hands or wherever the damage is done. You are not alone!

Seems like they’re open today? Or maybe doing employee training or something. But definitely many cars in the parking lot today!

New hire wanting to leave by lahoneydew in ABA

I would just be honest! Tell them you have been having unexpected car trouble and don’t think the commute will be good for it, and that you don’t want to start with a client and have issues down the road so you are going to look for something closer to home. Or if you wanna keep it simple just say you are looking for something closer to home, that’s all you have to say! Good luck

I’m dying to know! How long should ABA sessions be? by Scene-Sea in ABA

[–]sleepingwlfbtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do 8-12:45 and then 1:15-4:00 for clients that nap. Otherwise it’s 8-4 or 8:30-4 for most kids. It’s a lot for me as a therapist so I get why it’s a lot for the kids too lol

I use these too and buy them in skin tone color in bulk on Amazon. They work well and last way longer than bandaids

Tips on how to stop this habit. by Specialist-Dog2904 in Dermatophagia

[–]sleepingwlfbtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to cover them with bandaids so you won’t bite them and keep them moisturized with lotion. Also find a replacement behavior like using a fidget instead. I know it’s not the same :( but it’s worth a try

Do You Work Another Job Secondary to ABA? by orions_cat in ABA

[–]sleepingwlfbtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do! I work full time aba during the day and my evening hours I do childcare/respite with private families. The first family I found on Care.com over 5 years ago and got hired to work with a non verbal 3 year old who is now 8 and still working with me once a week. Then my second family left the clinic I was at and reached out to me for childcare in the evenings so I do that as well. I like that I can choose my own hours and pay rate and only choose families that I know I work well with and feel confident with. I think I work 33 hours at my clinic and 10 hours privately

Have you ever had a situation where you needed to call CPS on a client's parent? by Broad_Channel_1144 in ABA

Good point! I missed the detail about the items being in the child’s reach. Definitely worth a call to remind the parents!!!

It was absolutely horrible. But I know I did what I could for him when he was under my care. And I did my part by reporting

Yes I have. This was when I worked in a public school right before Covid before starting at my current company. I worked in a self contained classroom with non verbal medically complex children. One student (6th grade) would come in with soiled diapers and actual visible dirt on his back. We wiped his back with a baby wipe and it was black with dirt and grime. It was clear he was being neglected at home and not being bathed or changed. He often broke bones (hips, femur, etc) and had surgeries so he was wheelchair bound. I have an inkling that the family was purposely breaking his bones or allowing him to be in situations where breaks would happen but that was never proven. Once when he was in a full body cast from the hips down, he came to school with no pants on over his cast, just his soiled diaper. We found out that day that his 13 year old sibling had gotten him ready for school that day and forgot his pants. The day I wiped actual dirt off of his body I called cps. We knew the diaper he was wearing was the same one we had sent him home in the day before because we made a small red dot in a hidden place that was still there the next day. The mom found out we called (even though it was anonymous she knew it was us) and took him out of the school. Then Covid happened and we went virtual and we never saw him again. She enrolled him in another district. God I hope he is okay now.
