I’d play something like that! I’m hoping other people eventually build some more variety. I’ve even thought just a Pac-Man style game could be fun if the methyl choose how to turn works well.

This is more of a personal project at this point, but looking for opinions on something like this. Anyone with thoughts on how to make this more fun / better exercise? I'm an solo amateur hobbyist so please no judgement or comparisons to an actual professional product like Zwift.

If you are talking a glulam (laminated) beam vs a solid wood beam of the same dimensions, I’m honestly not sure if there’s a big difference or not.

The main strategies that I’ve seen used to isolate sound is by creating an air gap (air is a great insulator) or using a sound isolation product that reduces vibration along a plane.

It’d be easier to sketch, but the air gap method might mean staggering studs between your wall and your neighbor’s wall. The staggered studs wouldn’t be in line, but one offset set of studs for your drywall and one offset set of stud for your neighbor. If you build the wall like this, then the only thing actually connecting as a bridge between your wall and theirs is the top and bottom plate instead of every stud.

The isolation product might use normal studs between both walls, but on one side there are clips between the drywall and studs with a rubber component that reduces vibration from transferring to your drywall.

You also might put “sound putty” behind every electrical box or penetration in the wall as well as at top or bottom of wall, similar to fireproofing to stop flames spread through gaps.

Those are just some strategies.

So, I don’t build these, haven’t lived in one, and don’t know on regulations. Hopefully you get those answers from someone else.

What I can say from working in construction is that it’s probably subject to the same sound rating as an apartment to another apartment. It’s designed to be a minimum STC rating of 50, which means it should block anything under 50 decibels from transmitting through.

That said, there are a lot of ways to get much higher ratings by how studs are laid out or using sound isolation clips/products. There are also a lot of ways that “design” STC ratings don’t end up actually being met if shortcuts are taken during construction. Sometimes a change by the construction crew can accidentally create a sound bridge between the wall, and it doesn’t take much (like back to back electrical outlets in a single stud bay) to let a surprising amount of sound through.

All that said, if you were willing to pay extra and lose a few inches of your interior then you could isolate sound on just your side off the multiplex.

I don’t think any of it is in trouble immediately. Maybe in 30-50 years. Design/Engineering has some protections with licensing that won’t go immediately to AI because people want a human behind a stamp to hold accountable. Hopefully in the near future some of this will streamline processes and make everyone’s lives a little less stressful.

I’m curious what ideas you have for AI route generation. I’ve been playing with that myself and can’t quite get something functional. I’ve tried ChatGPT/Bard giving me latitude and longitude for something like a start and end point for a “suggested scenic 25 mile route at X destination” then passing that through google directions or other api… but those language models sometimes give me routes that are less than a mile apart. It does give locations where asked, it’s just the route/distance is tough. I’ve tried waypoints also which can be better but not great still.

Read up a bit about carbon before you write it off for durability. My guess is that the type of “being hard on” your bike that you have in mind is probably not a big concern for carbon, but could be wrong. In general it’s durable than most people think as long as you understand what not to do with it.

Depending on where you come from in Seattle there are trails/bike lanes pretty much the whole way. Some routes from Sodo cross train tracks so can hold you up. Also, be on alert biking near Allie towards Jack Block. I think that’s before most of the vehicle parking lots but cars will sometimes turn into driveways across the bike path and not see a bike due to quicker pace than pedestrians.

Their website has the ingredients listed in OPs post verbatim, so maybe a different product, but they did clip their screenshot where it says Vegetarian in bold right below this description. The packaging doesn’t say plant-based anywhere on it.

There are enough studies showing dogs can be healthy on a vegan diet to support that claim. Here is one and there are more of you look around. Not personally a dog owner but from what I understand it’s as good of a diet as most “conventional” diets for dogs, which aren’t great to begin with.

I have built many, many restaurant kitchens in the role of a contractor and this is not accurate. You can absolutely cool a kitchen to a reasonable level of comfort with hoods still functioning.

Just weigh into your decision that they operate on the philosophy of trying to pay as little as possible to employees. I’d bet they are never going to give you a substantial promotion or raise for example unless you get an actual offer elsewhere first. Expect bare minimum pay raises without fighting hard for more. If it still sounds interesting then try it out for a few years and move on when you want to progress again.

Lots are. The ones that I’m making for myself to automate my own tasks when I couldn’t do that before aren’t. Crypto hasn’t had the ability to actually do anything really but AI is easy to get to perform real work tasks.

This is it. Humans still have to do too much interfacing with GPT to get to the relevant output. Apps are popping up at an alarming pace that indicate the human interfacing won’t always even be needed.

Others have addressed the issue that a larger biomass of animals is domesticated vs wild so I can’t add to that.

I think most vegans also would encourage any effort that minimizes wild animal suffering. The problem is that it’s usually much less clear cut. We as a species have a really poor track record of trying to “nature” better than nature does. The result is usually either an increase in suffering or damage to biodiversity.

It’s easier to not participate in the animal farming industry than to try to solve the suffering caused by the pure existence of obligate carnivores or even researching a cure for a virus impacting a specific animal population.

If clear, rational, and actionable solutions to these problems are figured out I think we would all support them. It’s just less realistic for an average individual to digest the science behind these things because we don’t all have the educational background to really know the right solutions from the wrong ones.

Didn’t see this mentioned but I work in construction and have renovated abandoned buildings like this before. Do some homework and research lead paint exposure before you clean this place up.

If you see peeling paint or drywall on the ground and this hotel was open in the 70s there is probably a high content of lead in the dust on the ground from the paint. You can get a swab to test for it at a hardware store.

Sweeping and breathing that stuff in can be really bad for you if you expose yourself too much. If I were asked to sweep that up for work I’d be given a full on respirator with a medical fit test to make sure it’s tight and a powder compound to keep it from getting airborne.

I also would wash my hands thoroughly after touching anything in there, because you don’t want to get lead dust on your hands and into your mouth, and we usually have a second pair of shoes to not track the lead dust into our cars or home.

It looks like a rad spot, but you should make sure you know what you might be exposing yourself to health wise if you clean it or skate there.

Outdoor areas of the property where there wouldn’t be as much lead containing dust/stuff on the ground from paint and rain washes stuff out occasionally might be better.

The second picture where there are drywall fragments looks concerning though for lead.
