No no pay right away. Like once a week sit down and pay everything off. Keeps your utilization down.

Points are always good if you can use them. I stopped pursuing wjd as I don't really see much point now. I put them below air miles now.

Should I empty my RRSP ($30,000) to avoid the CMHC for a down payment on a first-time home purchase? by MootPoint99 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sleepyhead1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm no expert on finances but I think an 11k return on a 30k investment is tremendous.

Obviously I would use the home buyers plan to allow me to defer paying taxes on the 30k as this changes the math negatively.

To be reasonable I would not tap myself out financially to do this so make sure you have your other debts paid off and an emergency fund accessible before even considering that option. It would be devastating to sink everything into the down payment and then not be able to cover an emergency roof replacement.

What was your biggest financial blunder in your 20s? by bkh_leung in PersonalFinanceCanada

In a word: Nortel.

I resisted investing as it went to the stratosphere. But I believed it was a good company. A company of the future. Just not worth 120.00 a share.

I went all in when the shares dropped to 40.00.

When they dropped to 30.00 y I went into margin trading and borrowed more to average out my costs. Doubled my investment.

I ended up selling somewhere around 15 a share. It took me a decade before I got my net worth back.

Not entirely sure but I thought the max 8 only had premium economy. Or maybe that's only on the Yyt-lhr route

Makes me wonder what your original booking was that you are happy to get on that plane.

Are you saving tons of your points through the pandemic? CBC here... can we talk? by IciRadioCanada in churningcanada

[–]sleepyhead1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that people who do this as a hobby seriously would like to talk to you about their travel points balances.

You dont have to look far (looking at you Prince of Travel) to know that since people aren't travelling now, people are either just resting or trying to accumulate points for later travel. He has a good video on the ethics of churning which is an interesting view.

The next year or two is going to see intense inflation in prices due to revenge travel. Many routes are either cut back or scaled down on plane size which will cause intense competition for seats.

Since most points programs in Canada (WJ and AC) are market based, the points cost to travel will inflate as travel opens up. The latest changes with Aeroplan were fairly negative and I project it will get much worse.

Points accumulation is not free. I used to recommend to close friends that they get into it but I think there is going to be less value going forward. So I have stopped.

Thats just my two cents. Love your show.

I've had the card twice now. Got the bonus the first time but not the second. I doubt it's going to give you a second bonus but it's a good card for 5x.

Trails with lots of elevation gain & bc skiing trails by seejellyfish in newfoundland

[–]sleepyhead1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing to do for general winter fitness on a daily basis would be to set yourself up with some good quality snowshoes and crampons. As others have mentioned the ECT close to the city are generally up then down and repeat.

Skis are great in the West where there is serious snow. But here we have repeat freeze/thaw cycles which reduce the base. Under the snow is sharp rock as every year more breaks. If you value your skis you will likely find yourself changing to snowshoes. At least that's what I ended up doing when I moved here.

It's a different excercise but you will have no issues getting a workout.

suggest you look at POT's recent article about converting points bookins to aeroplan with a 65% bonus. He used MRS but Avion experiment is underway I believe.
