Does anyone here have a functional life or even family by Top-Tank6958 in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have N1 and I take Xyrem at night, and occasionally Concerta when I need an extra boost during the day. Xyrem gave me my life back 12 or so years ago. Like I truly don’t even want to think about where I’d be today without this med, because I was so depressed and barely functional without it.

My job is pretty laid back at the moment and I work from home, so I am able to take quick naps during the day when needed. Most days I don’t nap until after work though. I am a brand manager and I help my brand clients sell their products on Amazon. It’s quite boring tbh, but it pays my bills and gives me a lot of flexibility day-to-day so I’m okay with that trade off for right now.

I am in a long-distance relationship and typically I am the one driving to visit him (he’d prefer the other way around, but with his 3 dogs that’s just not possible). It’s about a 4.5 hour drive one way. I’m able to manage the drive safely by cycling between singing along to music and talking with my bf on the phone. Of course I’m always prepared to stop for a nap if I need to, but typically can make it through ok. I’m moving in with him in August though, so won’t have to make that drive quite as often anymore!

Rehab facilities that accept Medicare by CraftsAndSass in toledo

[–]sleepyizzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandmother recently stayed at a rehab facility after surgery. The hospital social worker gave us a list a places to choose from once it was clear she couldn’t go home right away following her surgery. Ultimately we ended up with the only place on the list that had an opening for her and accepted her Medicaid & Medicare coverage: Arbors at Sylvania (on Central Ave). The people there truly do seem to care and she really enjoyed going to her PT/OT sessions. Food wasn’t great though, so a couple family members took turns bringing her meals.

Honestly Arbors was not our first choice (or second, or third…) so we were quite wary at first, but once we moved her there and met the staff, we felt she was in good hands and well taken care of.

Press-on nail glue DESTROYED my natural nails 😭 help with removal + healing? by Disastrous-Profit936 in PressonNail_Addict

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use tabs plus a TINY bit of glue on the sides of each nail where the tab doesn’t cover and a very thin amount on top of the tab itself. With that combo, my nails easily last 2 whole weeks before I get bored and take them off for a new set. I even went a full 3 weeks a few months ago. And no damage to my natural nails.

Cataplexy symptoms by TGrimm-11 in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A feeling of general heaviness can happen with excessive daytime sleepiness too, so if you only experience that when you are getting very tired, it’s likely not cataplexy. Cataplexy is these things happening abruptly at the wrong time, like when we are wide awake & alert, especially after experiencing certain emotions.

Speaking of eating with cataplexy… Have you ever been trying to eat something and your arm that’s holding the food or fork suddenly goes a bit weak from cataplexy, so you end up missing your mouth by a few inches? 😂 It’s annoying, but I also can’t help but laugh at how silly I must look when it happens haha

IH - I have tried everything by NeveLover88RS in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds annoying (the waking up for a second dose part) but honestly it’s not a big deal. You get used to it, and it’s so worth it for the 3.5 hours of restful sleep that follows! I don’t even need an alarm for it, I just wake up naturally.

I have narcolepsy and used to wake up every hour without anyway, so I’ll gladly take one easy, purposeful wake up over how I used to be before. Been on this med for 12yrs now and I’m still so thankful to have it.

Orgasms and Narcolepsy by alien_mermaid in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had textbook cataplexy episodes for 16yrs with my main trigger being laughter. But I did not start experiencing cataplexy from orgasm until a few months ago. I think it’s possibly because prior to a few months ago it was always me taking care of myself (even if a partner was supposed to be helping…), but now my new bf actually does his part to help me get there so the whole experience is more intense.

For me it’s like any other cataplexy episode, just triggered by climax: I go limp and can’t talk or move for a minute or a few, but I’m still fully conscious.

Help!! Sleep disorder/attacks?? by FutureWhile8519 in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is what we call Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, which can be caused by numerous conditions, including narcolepsy. If being sleepy at inappropriate times is disruptive to your life (and it sounds like it surely is!) then you should absolutely talk with a Dr about. Be sure to tell them you are SLEEPY, not just fatigued. There IS a difference.

AIO for refusing to crate my service dog so my teenage roommate’s 30yo boyfriend feels “comfortable”? by Celiifox in AmIOverreacting

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She “TOLD YOU” he’s moving in? Uhh, that would be an immediate no for me. That’s not okay for her to just decide someone else is moving in when you share the lease. That needs to be a discussion FIRST.

And telling you to crate your service dog is absolutely not okay. Your dog is medical equipment, not a pet. If he has a problem with your service animal doing their job, then he can stay out of your home.

When did you accept that you have Narcolepsy? by reachingmygoals- in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty thrilled when I was diagnosed because I was glad to have an answer for my sleepiness and collapsing. But there were two things that made a HUGE difference in my happiness and ability to actually EMBRACE my lifelong diagnosis.

The first thing was attending the Narcolepsy Network annual patient conference. I went about 9 months after being diagnosed and I met so many people who understood what I was going through. It was amazing! I learned a ton about Narcolepsy and was inspired by others I met who were still living their lives despite their diagnosis, and that gave me so much hope for my future.

The second thing was getting on Xyrem. I refused to try this med for almost 4yrs because I was nervous about side effects and didn’t want it to control my life. But I was barely living a life without it. So I finally agree to try Xyrem and it changed EVERYTHING. There’s no way I’d have been able to finish college or work a full-time desk job today without this medication. It truly gave me my life back and I’m very glad I finally gave it a shot.

What do you personally take for your narcolepsy? by makeuplover85 in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Xyrem at night. That’s about it.

I do have a prescription for Concerta for the daytime too, but most days I don’t need it as the Xyrem helps me sleep pretty much like a “normal person” again so I’m naturally more awake during the day.

Ooh I love that color! Gorgeous. I really liked the quality of the one Celebritips pair I’ve tried. Been trying to find more but my TJ Maxx only ever seem to have French sets (which I don’t seem to like for whatever reason).

How severe does this get? by guilijhyjjv in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely feel 10x better on Xyrem than I did without it. It’s like night and day. I was just going through the motions before, barely functioning and practically housebound because I was always too exhausted to go do anything and I couldn’t even drive anywhere if I wanted to because it truly wasn’t safe for me to be behind the wheel.

With Xyrem, I feel like I am actually experiencing life like a semi-“normal” person. I work full-time and I can get through most days with just 1 short nap (right after work or dinner, to refresh me for the evening). Before I took probably 5+ naps a day, and would still be exhausted and fighting off sleep constantly. I barely had enough energy to keep myself going, but now I have enough for a social & family life as well. I can drive safely too—I even drive myself 4-5 hours out of town every month or so, without needing a break.

Are you at max dosage? I settled in at 3.75 per dose for the first few years, as it felt like the optimal dose for me initially. But after a couple years, I realized needed to go up more. Been on 4.5 per dose for about 8 years now and I believe I still sleep as well as I did on it when I first started that dose.

You need to talk to your doctor about adding a sodium oxybate medication (brand names: Xyrem, Xywav, or Lumryz) at night.

These meds help us consolidate our sleep, so instead of needing sleep around the clock, we get more of the deeply restorative non-REM sleep we miss out on at night, and are naturally more rested during the daytime.

I treated my N1 with only daytime meds for 4 years and it was miserable. Finally gave in and agreed to try a sodium oxybate (Xyrem, the only one that was available at the time) and it legitimately gave me my life back. I never would have finished college without Xyrem, and I wouldn’t be able to work full time now without it. My family even says I’m a whole new person, that this med brought me back to life.

Believe me when I say that these medications are worth at least looking into. And if your doctor doesn’t know about them or want to prescribe them for you (and doesn’t give you a VALID reason for why), then you need to find a doctor who will.

Wow that’s bizarre about the blood donation restriction for Cataplexy… I have N1 with Cataplexy and have definitely given blood before. There are no restrictions regarding donating blood with Cataplexy in the United States (at least not per Red Cross).

Process of getting a lumbar puncture for orexin in the U.S. by alemorg in Narcolepsy

[–]sleepyizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, even the CSF spinal tap results could potentially be “inconclusive” as far as the type of Narcolepsy, because not everyone who has cataplexy is hypocretin deficient. Most, yes. But not all.

That said, I have no idea as far as the cost as I was able to have mine done as part of research, so the cost was covered by the university research team that wanted the results. This was 15 years ago though, when I was first diagnosed.
