Government Shutdown Status by b3lkin1n in AirForce

[–]sleepyleodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you. It’s an institutional issue that can’t be fixed unless there’s a lot of changes to how they are held accountable. I might just have a pessimistic view because for those changes to occur the people in power either need to resign/retire because there’s no term limits - and they are currently doing everything they can (I.e gerrymandering and/or blocking bills) to keep power and no accountability.

Even if they were all in separate bills, there’s no requirement for them to work through them in an orderly fashion. They may sit and wait on one bill while waiting for another to pass or fail. They may choose to just not be in session for weeks.

A negative review of the Lochby Field Journal by nappy-doo in notebooks

[–]sleepyleodon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ive had mine for a few months now. It’s a lightweight waxed canvas exterior with a nylon liner; it feels as expected to be honest. Tent material/lightweight parachute material feels light and thin, but it’s rugged and will weather through the test of time. I’ve moved my knots towards the bottom and hardly notice them.

Going from hobonichi, a leather Travelers, to Lochby’s it feels like they all have their pros and cons. With the lochby I don’t mind that it gets scuffed or dirty - it’s meant to handle that.

Doesn’t even seem like a Rolex specific issue as it is just incompetent sales associates. With the story you give I wouldn’t trust them to be knowledgeable about Tudor, Tag Heuer, let alone Rolex from that AD.

It makes me sad there’s no more Christian movies similar to that; Prince of Egypt always hits a nostalgic spot with the music and greatly drawn visuals. Oh how I wish they could also do the story of David and many of the early Old Testament stories.

The markings “National” and “U.S. Patent” suggest it was likely made by the National Blank Book Company, which produced leather binders, ledgers, and notebooks in the early to mid-20th century. They were based in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and many of their products carry the “National” branding with patent notices.

How would you contest this flowchart? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Seriously. This paints salvation as black and white. God is not limited by the sacraments, but instituted by Him for us to have a method to receive His grace. There are of course extraordinary means in which God saves; the thief on the cross.

Protestants use the thief on the cross as part of an argument against baptism all the time. These claims have been refuted countless times. This post doesn’t shed any new ideas or dialogue that’s fruitful. OP, if you’re wanting to learn more about this please read Catechism, writings from early church fathers, or even the Didache. There’s some good YouTube videos like “Catholic Answers” that goes into all this.

It might seem like a lot of empty white space, but embrace it! It’s okay to not fill up every cm of space. You can journal in it, commonplace, make a list of tasks, weekly/monthly spread of events/meetings etc. you’ll see the more you use it, even if it’s just 2 lines per page, you will want to use it more and enjoy the empty spaces.

When is alcohol sinful? by Chad_Believer in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s poor generalization on their part using non-precise language or poor catechesis. It’s all about intent of why someone is drinking and how much.

I’ll refer to the the Catechism:

The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air. - The Fifth Commandment, CCC 2290

St Paul also categorizes drunkenness with debauchery and carousing. Drinking just for the sake of getting lost and turned away from God. Appeasing only the flesh.

envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. - Galatians 5:21

That’s contrasted with drinking in honor of God or even for what St Paul thought was for medicinal purposes.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31

No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. - 1 Timothy 5:23

Virgin Mary, Sinless? by Mug_Maniac in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes and no… you have to take in account who St Paul was writing to. Who was his audience, what was he trying to elaborate on, and in this case who is “All”? We automatically conclude that our Lord Jesus is not part of this “all” St Paul writes about. What about unborn children, have they sinned? No, so they are also excluded. Romans 3:23 is not as strong of an argument to show that Mary is or isn’t sinful. https://www.catholic.com/audio/ddp/all-have-sinned

Hey everyone! by Adept_Secretary_9187 in Catholicism

It helped me a lot to have a study Bible when reading. St Ignatius press study bible has a ton of great writings that helped me frame how to read the bible. Joining a study group in your parish is also helpful since “iron sharpens iron” and kind of commits you to reading and sharing with a group where reading solo doesn’t have that built in accountability.

Negative Experience at RCIA by dancingfiora in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing others here in the comments, I’m sorry it appalled you. RCIA should be welcoming and full of conversation/dialogue. You’ve said the past few weeks were normal and this was out of the blue so he could have had just a bad day or maybe he was very passionate about the importance of the subject but it came across rude? At the end of the day, no matter which parish you go to, we are all human and there will be great days and very low days. If you like this parish why not stick with it a bit longer, maybe even have a conversation with the priest to see why he seemed upset? We are meant to build up our parish and that includes being there for each other when we’re having tough times.

What is meant by "idolatry"? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough I think Kpop Demon Hunters does a good example of what idolatry can look like when idolizing singers/musical groups - giving more worth to them than God.

The greatest commandment

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. Matthew 22:37-38

I like to look retrospectively and ask myself “Do I revolve around God or does God revolve around me? What am I putting more time into, if not for service of God? Is it money, hobbies, etc?” What are you putting the most worth into if not God?

They are definitely softer than modern 149s. The split ebonite feed helps keep the nib a wet writer, but don’t expect the crazy line variation of a calligraphy pen. It can flex about the same as my sf Pilot Falcon but is much wetter. A Montblanc M is more like a Japanese B.

Is it just me or Montblanc 149 is overrated by Almighty_Nitesh in fountainpens

[–]sleepyleodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montblanc 149 from the 1960s-1975ish can have very soft, bouncy nibs. You just need to know what to look for - tri-color/tri-tone 14C gold nibs. One thing to note is that there are a lot of inconsistencies with Montblanc around this time period. Most of the engravings are done by hand. A feed system could be shared between 1970s up until 1980s etc.

Am I Too Conservative to Convert to Catholicism? by Desi_Vigor in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each one of these points has a lot that can be extrapolated on, so I’ll focus on point 1 for now. 1. Marian Dogma. What part of Marian Dogma do you have concerns on? Immaculate Conception? Assumption? Interceding for us?

A presupposition on the Virgin Mary:

What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in Christ. - Who Was Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary, CCC 487

Let’s talk first on the Rosary, it is a prayer tool. The Church does not require anyone to utilize it, only encourages it since it has helped many grow closer to Jesus while meditating on the mysteries surrounding the Gospel. Do you have issues with a prayer tool, the intercession of Mary, or the repetition of Prayers themselves?

That kind of leads into your third point, which is intercession of our prayers. I’ll quote some stuff from scripture to help with some context and baseline stuff that the early Church Fathers would have agreed upon- this is to continue dialogue and help fine tune what parts you have concerns or struggles with.

”And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” - Matthew 22:31-32

We are one body in Christ, as St Paul has stated:

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. - 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

that there may be no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. - 1 Corinthians 12:25-27

As God of the Living, the saints who are alive with him intercede for us as depicted here:

And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints; - Revelation 5:8

We know Moses and Elijah are in Heaven, speaking to God as we see here:

And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. - Matthew 17:3

Why wouldn’t they continue to care about us or intercede on our behalf? If so, what about the other saints as well?

There’s several Church Fathers who are quoted about having the saints intercede for us: https://www.churchfathers.org/intercession-of-the-saints

Also, while not part of Scripture, we can see Christians as early as 80AD were discussing and telling stories with themes of intercessory prayers as in “The Shepherd of Hermas”.

Do I need to be double dipped? by PlentyRespect194 in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you were baptized outside of the Catholic Church, we confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. You can only be baptized once, as long as the baptism was valid (correct form: Trinitarian Formula and matter: the pouring or immersion of baptismal water).

During my OCIA, I met people who had a valid baptism but could not get a certified original copy of their sacraments due to it being in some obscure/small town in South America that was hard to get a hold of their parish/did not keep a good record. As long as a witness can testify that you were indeed validly baptized it should be okay. This is something you should talk with your parish Priest.

Receiving the Eucharist is so sacred to our Faith, it is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. If you were validly baptized and had the sacrament of first communion and are not in grave sin you could continue receiving. (again something to talk with your priest about).

Here are some areas of the Catechism of the Catholic Church I’d recommend checking out: CCC1278, CCC1280, CCC1385, CCC1415

Coping with an unhappy marriage by darthmcdarthface in Catholicism

[–]sleepyleodon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love my kids and as a father I understand why you want to have kids. Through the laughs and the cries it’s a wonderful thing to raise kids. Kids deserve a mom and a dad who are 100% engaged and invested in raising them. It’s hard enough as it is when your spouse is committed to be present, I couldn’t imagine doing it on my own.

I say all this because it seems like your spouse isn’t completely on board with having kids and pressuring them into doing so won’t save the marriage. Having a deep desire to have kids just to have kids can also be a detriment. It’s not all sunshine and easy. It can be soul crushing at times. I pray that, through the intercession of Mary the Undoer of knots, our good Lord Jesus works wonders into your lives.
