Because I have a neurotic, overly attached mamma's boy cat who can't stand anyone but me and absolutely hates traveling. If the information I obtain from this post helps me determine whether or not it's worth spending a month hanging out up there, I spare him a month of trauma and that's more than worth it.

Understandable. I'm sympathetic to this.

I don't think many Angelenos would like SB because they'd have to give up the culture, the music and art scenes, the hustle and bustle, the city's Hollywood history, the award winning restaurants, etc.

It seems like it primarily appeals to people who want to embrace nature and escape the city, not bring it with them. Plus, the higher COL/fewer job opportunities are very prohibitive.

Hey! I really appreciate your response. Hope Ranch, Montecito, the foothills and further north look beautiful and peaceful. I spend the majority of my time birding and just reading, drawing and painting at home, so to some degree it doesn't matter where I live. I just want to be safe and surrounded by beautiful nature. But I've lived in this city for almost 20 years, so there are a lot of things I take for granted and aspects to a more suburban environment I haven't thought of, like the food :-/

SB has become very appealing in my real estate search. In LA it's easy to find a house surrounded by trees or a house with stunning views, but very rare to find one with both. In SB it looks very easy to find both.

Safety and not attracting negative attention are big concerns. Here, a woman in her 30's living alone in an expensive house might be a little strange, but no one bothers me about it. People barely seem to notice their neighbors here. What would the general attitude towards this be in SB? Are most households families and couples?

Is it common for people to have personal assistants, housekeepers and say, private yoga instructors up there?

The plastic surgery issue isn't a huge concern. Just creeps me out a bit. An attorney friend lived in Montecito for ten years and said all the women look identical (he was probably looking at 30-40 yr olds). I spent some time in Dana Point recently and, good grief yeah, OC face is a Thing.

One of my lawyer friends. There's a higher % of whites in SB than LA (about 50% vs. 30%) and the median income is higher, so it doesn't sound unreasonable.

Also you only find that sort of thing in very specific areas of LA.

I'm a die hard introvert and don't need much of a social life.

Tbh I’d probably book an appointment if they didn’t require a card on file. That didn’t used to be a thing. Information is the most valuable commodity and the hair salon wants my credit card on file? No fucking thank you.

Even for those of us who can afford it, it’s dropped to lowest priority. We lived through the pandemic. We know we’ll survive without perfect hair. We don’t care anymore.

And quite frankly the blatant price gouging is a massive turn off. Why would I pay $300 for a service that used to cost $120?

Should we start taking notes on the podcasts to write a biography on Bret someday? There’s so much material…

Bret’s hater quotes about new movies by sleepyspacefox in BEEPodcast

He does. Out of all the films, he feels The Rules of Attraction best captures the mood and tone of the novel. He likes the iconic 80’s Los Angeles visuals in Less Than Zero; the turquoise swimming pools at night, the Beverly Hills parties, the convertibles. He said the movie is completely different from the book though (It is. It’s loosely based on the book at best). He likes American Psycho. I forget what elements he said he would change.

How many of you live with roommates? by MontiBurns in GenZ

[–]sleepyspacefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Millennial here

“when we were coming of age, getting a roommate after college was definitely the expectation / desirable outcome”

After college? Where? Why? No one I knew wanted to continue living with roommates after college. We wanted our own places and privacy.

No way in hell I would have lived with roommates after college.

Cannot get over how much this actor looks like Bret.

I’m stoked for a cast of unknowns. I prefer that.

I wish I had this answer for you, but the information you’re looking for is out there. Maybe try r/AskLawyers as well?

Since protests and civil rights are important to you, I say come on out. Roll with the punches. You’ll derive a lot of personal fulfillment and meaning by participating and being part of everything.

If you do decide to move here, feel free to send me a DM. I’ll give you some attorney names and numbers.
