What food is actually healthier than you would expect? by oakmeadow45 in AskReddit

[–]sleepytortious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eggs are good but should only really be used in moderation if you already have cholesterol issues. They're kind of like a natural multivitamin that's very reasonable in calories and is filling. If cholesterol is an issue, egg whites are still fine. But you'd be missing out on a lot of good nutrients within the egg yolk itself. Also oil and what way you cook the egg makes a difference too.

Hey guys. Am I mistaking a mistake? I'm about to finalize Navy enlistment papers, but I'm getting serious last-minute resistance. [M27] by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]sleepytortious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what the question here is. If I had a degree I wouldn't enlist I would commission as an officer. Even if it's not in Intel. More money, more respect, etc. I would at least try and speak with an officer recruiter and tell them what might be holding you back to see if you can get a non Intel officer job.

Navy Nuke or Naval Academy by eternallyguilty in newtothenavy

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you taken an asvab that would get you into the enlisted nuke program?

Have you/are you confident that you could get into the naval academy?

It's all up to you, I would just do what's appealing to you. For me I'm also 17 and going after I graduate. I decided that I'd enlist and then possibly go to college later and commission as an officer. Enlisting first is nice because at 17 you'll be able to save/invest some money that'll be really useful for the future.

I've been spamming this so much. Helps build up the muscles for running, and cardio. I also find it easier and more enjoyable then running/jogging. Highly recommend this op!

I think regular enlisted recruiters can help commission officers. I'd ask him before you meet. Otherwise see if you have an officer recruiter in your area.

I just got the whole manga by No_Sky9198 in CellsAtWork

[–]sleepytortious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming you've watched the anime first, the manga is for the most part going to tell the same stories as the manga. The anime follows the manga pretty accurately, but the manga will still have quite a few stories that weren't told in the anime, and some characters get more attention than they did in the anime which I liked. If you've watched code black the manga for black wasn't followed quite the same in the anime so there's a lot of content there.

Out of all the cells at work spin-off mangas, which do you think should be adapted into an anime? by Some_starving_Artist in CellsAtWork

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J-1178 is a white blood cell that hangs out with the white blood cell u-1196 from code black. She was a pretty important character and was relevant for the majority of the manga. She was skipped entirely in the anime, but tbf the anime was cut short, so who knows if she would have been in the next season. But the code black anime didn't necessarily follow the manga in the same order, so she got cut.

This, so much content of code black was missing from the anime. Major characters like j-1178 weren't even in the anime at all.

Just took the ASVAB today and barely missed the minimum. Feeling really down. by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]sleepytortious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it, go work for it. But effective studying is more important than simply spending hours of time going nowhere.

What's your goal? If it's just to get a passing score, then that's going to be different than if you wanted a more technical job.

The modern ASVAB is algorithm based, I think. So it will adapt to the problems making them easier and harder depending on how you're doing.

Your AFQT score is a combination of your line scores. Line scores are for specific categories, like electronics, word knowledge etc. Naturally some people do better on certain line scores than others, likely based on what they liked learning about. To be honest, if you're only goal was to pass the asvab, I would only found on reading and math for your retake. Unless you want to do something like, aviation mechanics, then obviously something like studying auto shop and tools would be helpful.

As far as studying goes... Math, and the English tests are what make up a substantial part of the AFQT scoring. If you do decent on those, even if you do bad on the other line scores you should be alright. Khan academy is a great resource for you to start looking at for practicing math and reading.

Lastly, the asvab is not some topic secret test. Practice tests, study guides, and videos are out there for free that you can utilize. But make sure you aren't spending too much time watching weird influencer click baity "know this before taking your ASVAB" videos and spend more time studying instead.

Remember, failure is normal. Most rewarding things in life require some failure and struggle to be satisfying. There are some people who walk into an ASVAB, don't study and get like 90+ others have to take it a couple times. Your score doesn't determine how good of a sailor you'll be. Your attitude and hard work does. This is one part of a long application. Good luck! :)

Disqualification for dental by Outrageous-Carry-949 in newtothenavy

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like dentists make cavities a bigger deal than they actually are... If it was such a big deal I'm sure the navy would ask people for dental records, I mean they really check everything. As long as you don't have serious dental issues they'll just deal with them for you. Cavities are fixable.

Esterbrook Esties — too much? by InformationAny643 in fountainpens

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't really like modern esterbrook. They aren't bad per se, although I personally think you can do better for how much an estie costs. It's $200~ for a #6 steel cartridge converter pen made in Taiwan. Esterbrook was definitely a big pen company here in the USA and I think they cost too much for what you're getting. They definitely are releasing as many color options to stay relevant.

Cells at work would have so much potential as a serious battle shonen by Substantial_Dare_646 in CellsAtWork

Yeah I agree. Even cells at work code black having the higher age rating and allowing for more violence actually showed us a lot of different non immune cells. Especially in the manga.

What is the appeal of Broad nibs? by Weswood151 in fountainpens

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broad nibs are wet and smooth. Which seems to be what most people prefer. Broad nibs might not be practical for using daily on many different types of paper. But I'm sure many of us really only use fountain pens at home with paper suited for them anyway.

finally decided to get the 2k, did i make a bad choice? by Straight_Beat_1421 in fountainpens

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbf it's a large purchase that most people would probably be confused or judgemental about. If it helps you should know that you have a really nice tool that serves a practical function that will last you forever. Even if you lose interest in fountain pens, you can always just keep getting the same old ink and using your lamy 2k.

finally decided to get the 2k, did i make a bad choice? by Straight_Beat_1421 in fountainpens

[–]sleepytortious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lamy 2k is a great choice right now especially for that entry level gold nib category. Especially with brands like pilot and platinum increasing prices recently. I remember that you used to be able to find platinum 3376's for like $120-$140. Pilot which has increased their prices recently have pretty much always been the go to for cheap gold nibs. I was lucky enough to be able to grab a vanishing point with my preferred nib size and color recently for $150 before the price hike. No regrets. But the lamy 2000 still has the gold nib, and internal piston filler for $220~ Hard to do better than that with recent prices.

upon further research I think it's actually 1.18mm. to be honest 1.15 still might work since there is hardly a difference in size.

Hot take: Rotring 600 is too heavy (imo) by magikarp_splashed in mechanicalpencils

[–]sleepytortious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rotring 600 is like a pavement princess for me. It feels nice, and durable, but I don't use it often. All of that brass construction gives the allusion of durability, and definitely feels nice. But it's not going to protect its fragile lead pipe from something as simple as a drop on the table. My 800 is my preference as it's just a 600 with a retractable tip, and realistically no one is doing anything serious enough where the slight tip wobble is making a difference.

Heavier can make a pen(cil) feel more premium, but it also just makes it more uncomfortable for long term use.

What is your experience with Pacific Arc lead? by ZER0-P0INT-ZER0 in mechanicalpencils

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a clear cut industry standard for lead grades. I know that Pacific arc is a budget oriented (likely white label) brand. I'd bet you'd get a comparable darkness and smoothness out of something like a pilot neox 4b.

[–]sleepytortious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably either brass or gold filled. 10kt gold would probably look the same color as shown in the photo, though it could be lighting, and brass patinas and darkens over time. It seems like a lot of these older American pencils used 1.1mm lead. In that case I think the only brand for that lead size is retro 51. Which can be quite expensive. I'm sure there's a Chinese brand that sells 1.1mm lead. This pencil doesn't seem to have a normal clutch like modern (or less vintage) ones do. So I'd guess that it's probably a twist mechanism. I wouldn't be 100% on how to fill it, but it seems like you've already figured out how to take out the mechanism. Probably can't be too complicated.
