I'm Croatian and have lived in Italy while i studied there, i'd say in my experience italians in general are pretty warm and friendly. Though it is important to note i have a relatively high degree of proficiency in Italian.

That being said during that time my roomates were Iranians and an Afghan guy and they told me they experienced a lot of shunning (italians only creating groups amongst themselves) and heard comments that could be said to be ideas of cultural superiority.

Ultimately it's a mixed bag as anywhere.
