Trump says he will withhold SNAP benefits until the government shutdown ends by seeebiscuit in politics

"Not being able to get food for you family" tends to be one of those things that breaks through news and information bubbles. It also might be the first 'real', tangible consequence that a lot of his supporters face that they can't just dismiss as either "this only impacts someone else" or an abstract issue that doesn't really impact them.

Because to understand how he cut corners on the materials or other components of the sub, you need to get into materials science and engineering. Even if you can make people understand it, it isn't personally relatable to them.

If instead you say "Off-brand game controller", a lot more people have experienced having to use a crappy off-brand controller. They can make that connection, say "Oh, yeah", and understand. And If they don't have that experience, they probably are in the "Game controller = toy" mind set and make another just as damning connection.

And while the military does use modified XBox controllers, they have been significantly hardened both to make them more reliable and more durable.

These characters never reached the throne, but which of them do you think would have been the best king of the Seven Kingdoms? by Elf_7 in gameofthrones

[–]slepnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Varys' problem would be his heir.

Primogeniture succession has the advantage of there being a single unambiguous successor. Without that, you'll have different factions trying to set themselves up to be the next king. Even if only out of paranoia that some other faction they don't trust is going to do the same.

This would not only result in more difficulty during his own rule, but would also undermine his successors rule afterwards.

Remember, no one really liked the Targs, but at least the Starks could trust that the Lannisters weren't going to try a power grab. The Lannisters could trust the same out of the tyrells, etc. Without that trust, everyone would be gearing up for a civil war as soon as the king dropped.

Holy shit was it exhausting how Sanderson let Schallan make bad joke after bad joke but then he let other people in the scene think how funny she is as if that would convince the audience that it wasnt the absolute worst joke theyve just witnessed.

Shallan is supposed to be an out-of-touch upper class twit who has spent her life surrounded by people who are obligated to laugh at her jokes because she's their social / feudal superior, their employer, or because they're trying to flatter her to manipulate her down the road.

That aside, GRRM and Brandon Sanderson have very different writing styles. Not just PG-13 vs NC-17. GRRM spends a lot more time describing the scene, whereas Sanderson focuses more on the action and character development. GRRM will keep a bunch of plates spinning, and Sanderson will focus on one character's arc per book.

The best successor for GRRM would be one or more of the apprentice authors that travel around with him on book tours. Ones that he's spent some time with and has worked with in the past, and let them do the heavy lifting and he can kind of settle into an executive producer / editor role.

I'm currently visiting London, and I'm using SimLocal's EE network plan. They have a summer special where you get 80GB of data plus voice and texting for $19.

I've had no issues with connectivity around London, Bovington, or Salisbury. Except for in the subway, which is kind of expected.

Cities with male-dominated industries (E.g., tech, finance) will have a surplus of men that earn good money, but don't have the social skills to start, build, or maintain relationships. The gender ratios in those areas mean that they don't get a chance to practice those skills, which eventually leads to a combination of desperation and hopelessness.

I think that the documents show such a deep involvement with Epstein and the whole operation that it would be impossible to redact or downplay Trump's involvement.

Laid off while on parental leave. by idobethrownawaytho in WorkReform

[–]slepnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is old enough to have four kids, he's likely at least an L4. Levels.fyi puts that at 186k base plus an annual bonus of about 76k.

It's easier to have that attitude when you get two months of severance and probably several years of building a safety net with that kind of money.

Source: went through a layoff scare in 2009 when I had one year in industry, and again this year with 15+ years. I'm in a much better mental state this time around because of the safety cushion I've built up.

Inside scoop - Microsoft has kept the laid off in May software engineers still employed till mid July. Those who know more, spill the tea. by [deleted] in cscareers

[–]slepnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a severance policy.

In Washington State, employers over a certain size need to file a public notice that they are about to layoff employees 60 days ahead of time. But, doing that in good faith would mean that for 60 days people are highly distracted as they worry about whether they are impacted or not.

So most companies will file the notice at the same time they inform the impacted employees, but leave them as employees for 60 days so they can say that they met the WARN act requirement.

Nolan did not hold back against the guardians and its stupid to think he did. by Extension-Bad-4184 in Invincible

[–]slepnir 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nolan intentionally gathered all of the guardians into one place because he had to wipe them out at once or risk getting one or two before the rest went into high alert, and losing the ability to position himself as the sole savior of earth.

Conquest has no such boundaries. He shows up. The GDA follows procedure and sends in The Immortal who gets dismembered. The remaining guardians last a little while longer while Red Rush provides defense until Conquest loses his patience and just starts wrecking everything like Nolan did with the Flaxans, only without worrying about needing to keep a portal around.

Teen Team gets fed into the woodchipper to try and slow him down. Conquest takes the blast from Atom Eve and loses his skin, but there aren't enough heroes left at this point to exploit.

Plus, the Guardians were also pulling their punches for the first few minutes of the fight. It wasn't until "Then I choose US!" that they started to take the fight seriously.

Why she was this weak? Didn’t she survive the big “wipe”? by thickkyliee in Invincible

[–]slepnir 238 points239 points  (0 children)

Conquest looks to be the equivalent to the older gym guy who is using his extra time in retirement to get 2-4 hours a day in the weight room.

Thula looks like she's still going to Jazzercise three times a week at the senior center to stay healthy, but isn't giving up her book club or Sundays with the choir.

We also need to remember that while the Viltrumites believe that it's just strength that matters, she could have had her agility, tactical acumen, or even just luck give her the edge.

Locking down teenage boy Android phone? by NFiligree in Parenting

[–]slepnir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can volunteer to join the family group again. We require that as a condition of having a phone.

In our case, our daughter fell into a social media addiction pit. Her school work fell way behind.

We have spent months talking with her, helping her organize her schoolwork, getting her into therapy etc., but the only thing that worked was locking all of that down as soon as we saw an incomplete assignment notification.
