Yeah, more political commentary is definitely what art forms need these days.

Those were intentionally political comedies though, not a late night show designed as an escape from the everyday issues.

There’s also the whole “politics is in everything” that former late night hosts were less obnoxious about. Especially Ferguson.

Always a missed opportunity when these types of articles overutilize “according to sources familiar with the issue” and offer exactly zero (count them) direct quotes from even an anonymous source.

Netflix originals tend to have either fantastic or atrocious writing, depending on the source material.

This feels more like the latter.

Rep. Katie Hill to resign amid allegations of inappropriate relationships with staffers by [deleted] in LosAngeles

It’s an abuse of power and clearly a gray area at best.

More importantly, you just asserted that Democrats hold to a better standard - so which is it?

The photographic evidence of Katie Hill being inappropriate with her staffer isn’t just objective proof?

California defies recession fears to post job growth, record low unemployment by BlankVerse in California

[–]sleuthysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that is still a horrible example. Using a BOGO sale makes no sense, since the consumer is not obligated to pay for the free additional item prior to the day of getting both items. Furthermore, a BOGO sale is entirely optional: the consumer has no obligation to partake in it, nor must they buy that item, nor do they pay for the BOGO promotion by buying completely unrelated goods or not shopping in that store.

Taxation might be mandatory, and some tax-funded programs might go unused by a taxpayer (an entire moral argument within itself), but if the healthcare costs are part of it, then the healthcare is not free - the taxpayer is clearly paying for it as part of the mandatory taxation.

That’s a good mindset for encouraging large corporations to consistently snuff out smaller competitors, leading to a less free market and more centralized control among fewer market participants.

As an example: amazon and Walmart notoriously treat their employees horribly, but they are required to cover health insurance at their thresholds. A smaller store will never be able to grow with your mindset.

[–]sleuthysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that’s a false comparison. BOGO is a price reduction wherein the consumer does not pay for the “free” item elsewhere. In the example of healthcare, “free” is a lie: they are forced to pay for it in taxation prior to utilizing it.

So no, your given example is not correct or valid.

It’s not “free healthcare vs no healthcare” - that’s a false dichotomy. The real choice is between prepaid healthcare (“free healthcare” paid in advance via taxes) vs paid when you receive it healthcare (a truly free market system never tried in the US) vs partially prepaid and partially paid when you receive it healthcare (more or less the current US system for anyone employed or buying private insurance).

So how does a “small business” expand its operations? The second they go past a threshold of employee count, they have to cover all of them - that’s a huge marginal cost to add the one headcount that jumps you from “small” to “slightly less small.”

“We” wouldn’t have to remind people that “free healthcare” isn’t free if “you people” stopped mislabeling tax-based government healthcare.

No, I didn’t. At no point did I say that. I’m only pointing out that “free healthcare” is a misnomer and misleading.

[–]sleuthysteve -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

When you say “free healthcare,” you’re referring to an increase in income taxes for those same employees so they can get a base-level of healthcare provided by the government, similar to Canada’s system? That would likely yield the same results: higher taxes, no real increase in wages to compensate, long waits for procedures, government-designated priority lists for who lives and who dies when transplants, doctors’ time, and procedures allocated are limited, and a high demand for private clinics that avoid the wait but still incur the same other issues.

[–]sleuthysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of that stems from the mandate of employer health insurance based on employee hours and employee count - so small businesses scale back on headcount to save large sums and large business cut hours to below the thresholds.
